This weekend’s balmy South Florida evening at the iThink Financial Amphitheater was the perfect setting for Slightly Stoopid’s highly anticipated West Palm Beach stop on their 2025 “Step Into the Sun” Tour. As the sun dipped below the horizon (and the clouds rolled in), the air filled with the unmistakable scent of rain and the excited chatter of fans ready for a night of unforgettable music. However, A slight rain delay couldn’t stop the show as the legendary reggae-rock band (known for their genre-blending sound and high-energy performances) did not disappoint, delivering a nearly two-hour set that spanned their decades-long career. Supporting acts Little Stranger and Iration warmed up the crowd with their own unique styles, making the entire evening a seamless celebration of laid-back grooves and infectious rhythms.

Kicking off the night, the Philadelphia duo Little Stranger—usually composed of John and Kevin Shields, but missing Kevin this time due to an illness with a backing band playing his parts—immediately captivated the crowd with their dynamic blend of hip-hop, indie rock, and reggae influences. John’s playful stage presence and clever, rapid-fire lyrics had early arrivals bobbing their heads and dancing along from the first song. Tracks like “Hollywood Not” and “Islands of Japan” showcased their ability to seamlessly switch between genres while keeping the energy light and engaging. By the time they closed their set with a cover of Gorillaz’ anthemic “Clint Eastwood”, it was clear that Little Stranger had made a slew of new fans while perfectly priming the audience for the acts to come.

As the golden hues of sunset began to clash with the stormy weather on the horizon, Iration took the stage, instantly dialing up the island vibes with their smooth, sun-soaked reggae-rock sound. The California-based band, originally from Hawaii, had the crowd swaying in unison as they launched into fan favorites like “Reelin'” and “Turn Around”. Frontman Micah Pueschel’s soulful, laid-back vocals floated effortlessly over the band’s tight rhythms, while their horn section added a rich, vibrant layer to their performance. Newer tracks from their latest album “Day Trippin“ blended seamlessly with their classic hits such as “Falling“, proving that Iration continues to evolve while staying true to their island roots. By the time they wrapped up with the feel-good anthem “Time Bomb”, the entire amphitheater was buzzing with anticipation for the night’s headliners….but not before a slight rain delay as Florida’s famously finicky weather reared its head.

After a few small showers and gusts of wind, the doors re-opened and the main event began as Slightly Stoopid returned to the West Palm Beach stage in what has now become a yearly tradition, kicking off with “Niceness” & “Wicked Rebel” and bringing out their good friend Charli 2na for a guest appearance. Founding members Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald led the charge, both trading off between playing the guitar and the bass, and flanked by their full band—complete with horns, percussion, and keys—creating a massive, layered sound that filled the amphitheater. The setlist was a perfect mix of old and new, catering to longtime fans while keeping things fresh. “2 AM” ignited a massive sing-along, while deeper cuts like “Officer” showcased the band’s punk influences.

Midway through the show, the tour’s namesake track “Closer to the Sun” felt like a spiritual centerpiece, its uplifting lyrics and breezy melody encapsulating the essence of the entire evening. The energy never waned as the band performed a marathon set that spanned nearly two hours, making up for time lost to the rain by playing far later than scheduled as a pleasant surprise to their dedicated fan base.Fan-favorite “Collie Man” turning the venue into a sea of bouncing bodies and waving hands, and towards the finale of the show Slightly Stoopid surprised fans with a blistering cover of Sublime’s “Slow Ride”, paying homage to their roots while sending the crowd into a frenzy. As the encore wrapped up with an anthemic cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Young, Wild and Free”, Slightly Stoopid had once again proven why they remain one of the most beloved live acts in the reggae-rock scene.
