Santana Delivers an Intimate Evening of Euphoria and “Oneness”

Black Magic and Soul Sacrifice: Santana’s Spellbinding Two-Hour Journey Captivates A Sold-Out South Florida Crowd – Photos and Review of the Santana Concert at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL

There is a certain magic that happens when an artist of legendary stature appears at an iconic venue that matches their mythological status. Such was the case last Saturday night as Carlos Santana and his incredible backing band took the stage at Hard Rock Live, nestled in the middle of the world-famous “Guitar Hotel” at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Part of his “Oneness” tour, the evening was an intimate “Night With Santana“—a two-hour journey through a half-century long catalog that has become the very fabric of rock and roll itself, presented without the buffer of an opening act to distract from the main event.

As the lights dimmed inside the sold-out 7,000-seat theater and the band’s opening video began to play on the screens, the anticipation in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. The beautiful new Hard Rock Live venue (which re-opened its doors in 2019 as part of the property’s stunning $1.5 billion expansion) proved to be the perfect vessel for such a performance—large enough to hold the energy of a full rock show yet acoustically refined enough to capture every subtle nuance of Santana’s unmistakable guitar tone. When the man himself walked onto the stage, greeted by a roar that seemed to shake the very foundation of the hotel above, it was clear this was not going to be a passive listening session. At 78 years old, Santana carries himself with the serene presence of a spiritual guru, but the moment his fingers touched the fretboard, the years melted away, leaving only the fiery, soulful guitar-based pyrotechnics that have defined his career for over five decades.

For two uninterrupted hours, the band functioned as a seamless, polyrhythmic organism. Anchored by the thunderous and remarkably precise drumming of Cindy Blackman Santana—whose chemistry with her husband borders on telepathic—the ensemble moved effortlessly through the eras. They conjured the Woodstock haze with a blistering rendition of “Soul Sacrifice” that featured an extended percussion duel, proving that the rhythm is still very much the devil’s music. The setlist wove through the psychedelic blues of “Black Magic Woman” and the infectious, hip-shaking groove of “Oye Como Va” before sliding gracefully into the Supernatural era with sing-along staples like “Maria Maria” and “Corazón Espinado“.

Of course, the setting only amplified the evening, as there is something uniquely fitting about witnessing a guitar hero perform underneath a 450-foot hotel shaped like a guitar, its exterior illuminated in a dazzling LED light show that can be seen for miles. For nearly two whole hours, Carlos Santana was able to craft a narrative arc that felt less like a concert and more like a melodic communal meditation, his riffs hanging in the air like a prayer before dissipating into the next volcanic groove. As the final notes of the encore closer “Smooth” faded and the crowd spilled back out into the warm Florida night, the towering instrument next door stood as a permanent monument to the power of six strings and the supernatural legacy of the man who just held 7,000 people in the palm of his hand. It was a reminder that in a world of fleeting trends, the sound of Santana is, and always will be, the universal tone of love.
