Ready to Fly: Goose Lets Loose In The First of Two Sold-Out South Florida Shows

Modern Day Jam Band Heroes Transform the Historic Auditorium into a Deep Groove Heaven for Night One of Two-Night Run – Photos and Review of the Goose Concert at the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft Lauderdale, FL

The recently renovated FTL War Memorial Auditorium became a nest of activity last night as Goose kicked off the first of two highly anticipated “An Evening With Goose” performances. With no opening act to distract from the intimate experience, the Connecticut-bred quartet delivered exactly what their devoted fanbase has come to expect: two sprawling, meticulously crafted sets separated by a brief intermission, allowing the music to breathe and the crowd to settle into the communal groove that defines the band’s culture. The “Evening With” format is a bold statement that few other bands have the confidence to pull off, placing the entire weight of the night squarely on the Goose’s wings and their telepathic interplay.

Inside the elegant, acoustically pristine confines of the venue, Rick Mitarotonda’s crystalline vocals and guitar leads intertwined with Peter Anspach’s vibrant keyboard textures and rhythmic second guitar, while the locked-in groove engine room of Trevor Weekz on bass and Cotter Ellis on drums propelled the first set through a dynamic ninety-minute journey as they kicked off the show with “Time to Flee“. The room, filled with an audience ranging from seasoned Deadheads to a new generation of jam enthusiasts, swayed like grass in the wind as the band moved seamlessly from the shimmering, reverb-soaked peaks of “Silver Rising” into the dense, funky valleys of “Your Ocean“. The venue’s spacious dance floor and comfortable balcony seating allowed for a choice of both uninhibited movement and relaxed listening, a balance that suited the band’s genre-blending approach perfectly

Beyond the notes emanating from the stage, the evening carried a deeper sense of community purpose. The parking lot and concourse hummed with activity well before the doors officially opened, much of it centered around the Conscious Alliance food drive. Fans who arrived early were greeted by volunteers collecting canned goods and monetary donations in exchange for an exclusive, limited-edition poster, along with two more unique posters available for purchase inside, much to the delight of the scene’s collectors. The artwork visually represented the introspective “happy place” that Goose’s live music provides, and served as a beautiful memento of a night where the physical act of giving back was as integral to the experience as the setlist itself.

After a short respite to refuel and reset, the band returned to the stage with “Echo of a Rose” for a second set that further showcased their incredible improvisational performance. While the first set leaned into the band’s newer material, the latter half of the night stretched out into the furthest, earliest reaches of their catalog with songs from their first album “Moon Cabin“. The intimacy of the War Memorial Auditorium—a venue known as much for its historic charm as its excellent sightlines—amplified the unspoken dialogue between the musicians. Every nuanced glance and subtle shift in tempo was visible, creating a real sense of witnessing something unique being built in front of you rather than simply hearing a reproduction of studio tracks (or watching the performance online on nugs.net, where each Goose set is live-streamed for those that couldn’t make it).

As the final notes of the appropriately titled encore song “How It Ends” echoed around the auditorium and the house lights rose, the crowd dispersed into the warm Fort Lauderdale night with the knowledge that Wednesday night would bring an entirely different journey. Such is the promise of every “Evening With Goose“: a guarantee that no two nights will ever sound the same. With one night down and one to go, the War Memorial Auditorium stands ready to host another evening of sonic exploration, proving once again why Goose has ascended from basement shows to revered stages with a devoted following hanging on every unpredictable measure.
