Sabalenka Edges Gauff in Hard-Fought Miami Final

All Gas, No Give as Sabalenka Stays Aggressive and Holds Off a Resilient Gauff to Win in Miami.

March 28th, 2026

From the opening games, Aryna Sabalenka made it clear this match would be played on her terms.

Facing Coco Gauff in the Miami Open final, Sabalenka leaned into her identity. Power, pressure, and pace. Over three sets, it proved to be the difference.

Gauff opened on serve but was immediately put on the defensive. Sabalenka mixed in a rare touch shot early, then followed it with relentless baseline striking to earn three break points. She converted quickly, capitalizing on a misfire and setting the tone from the start.

There was no letup.

Even after falling behind love-30 in the following game, Sabalenka responded with authority. An ace cut through the tension, a swinging volley finished the job, and just like that, she was up 2–0 and fully in rhythm.

Gauff steadied herself enough to get on the board, feeding off the crowd and holding for 2–1. But the underlying issue never quite left. Her serve. Double faults crept in, second serves sat up just enough, and Sabalenka kept stepping forward.

At 4–2, Sabalenka held with control, then struck again. A double fault from Gauff opened the door, and Sabalenka walked right through it. She closed the set with a clean forehand winner, the kind of finish that matched how she had dictated nearly every point.

Then came the response.

After a one-sided opening set, Gauff raised her level. The rallies extended. The pace shifted. She absorbed the power and redirected it, forcing Sabalenka into longer exchanges and testing her movement.

This time, the moments swung.

Gauff capitalized where she hadn’t earlier, taking the second set 6–4 and bringing the match back into balance. The energy changed. The crowd felt it. For the first time all night, it looked like a true battle.

It didn’t stay that way for long.

The third set reset everything, and Sabalenka wasted no time reclaiming control. She returned to first-strike tennis, stepping inside the baseline and dictating early in rallies. The intent was clear. Finish points quickly, avoid extended exchanges, and keep the pressure squarely on Gauff’s serve.

It worked.

Gauff remained competitive, but the same issues resurfaced at the worst possible times. Double faults and second-serve vulnerability created openings, and against a player like Sabalenka, those openings don’t last long.

She took them.

Point by point, game by game, Sabalenka reestablished control, driving through the court and forcing errors rather than waiting for them. When the final stretch arrived, there was no hesitation. Just clean execution and a firm close.

Sabalenka walked off with the title, having imposed her game from start to finish.

For Gauff, the performance showed resilience and the ability to adjust at the highest level. For stretches, she matched the intensity and flipped momentum.

But at this level, matches often come down to the smallest margins.

Serve stability. Second-serve confidence. Limiting free points.

That’s where this one was decided.

For Sabalenka, it’s more than a win. It’s a statement, delivered with power and backed by execution on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
