Sinner Outlasts Zverev in Statement Win at the Miami Open
Sinner’s Backhand Becomes the Difference in Miami, Carrying Him Past Zverev in a Match Full of Momentum Swings.
March 27th, 2026
The showdown between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev delivered exactly what you’d expect on a big stage at the Miami Open. Heavy baseline exchanges, momentum swings, and high-pressure shot-making defined the night.
Zverev had an early look in the opening set at 1–1, earning a break point after a rare short ball from Sinner. He couldn’t convert. After a tense stretch of deuces, he held for 2–1.

That window didn’t stay open long.
At 30–30 in the next game, Sinner stepped in with a heavy forehand and followed it with an overhead to create a break chance. He finished it off with a clean forehand winner, flipping control of the match in an instant. From there, he broke for 3–1 and began dictating rallies with depth, pace, and intent.
Both players leaned into their forehands, but Sinner’s backhand started to separate things. Even after a brief awkward step that raised some concern, he reset quickly with an ace and kept applying pressure. Zverev showed flashes, including a sharp down-the-line forehand, but couldn’t sustain it.
Sinner pushed ahead 4–1 and closed the set with authority.

The second set brought more resistance.
Zverev opened strong, holding comfortably and playing more aggressively. Sinner stayed steady, continuing to control points off the backhand while mixing in timely net play. A forehand into a clean volley midway through the set brought the crowd to life.
At 2–2, Sinner elevated again. Zverev struggled to stay even in backhand exchanges, and attempts to shorten points at the net were met with sharp passing shots, especially crosscourt.
Still, Zverev hung around.

He held under pressure and kept things level at 4–4. A time violation added tension, drawing a reaction from the crowd, but Zverev answered with a second-serve ace to settle things.
Both players held to 6–6, sending it to a tiebreak.
It turned on a single moment.
Zverev missed an overhead he’d expect to put away. Sinner didn’t give anything back. He stepped in, took time away, and closed points with precision from there. The shift felt immediate, and the finish followed quickly.
Sinner sealed it in straight sets.
His backhand, composure, and ability to elevate in key moments made the difference. Zverev created opportunities but couldn’t convert when it mattered.

With the win, Sinner continues to separate himself at the top tier of the sport, firmly alongside Carlos Alcaraz as one of the game’s defining forces right now.
