Radiohead Side Project “The Smile” Bring an Incredible Show to the St. Augustine Amphitheater – Review and Photos of The Smile Concert in St. Augustine, FL

This past Friday in the enchanting city of St. Augustine, Florida, the air was charged with anticipation as music lovers gathered at the St. Augustine Amphitheater for a night of sonic exploration. The stage was set for an extraordinary experience, with a highly anticipated (and rare) performance by The Smile, accompanied by opening act Robert Stillman. The highly acclaimed supergroup consisting of Radiohead members Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner are in the middle of their 2023 US tour supporting their debut album “A Light for Attracting Attention“, and excited fans drove from all across Florida to witness this event.

Kicking off the evening was Robert Stillman, a multi-talented musician known for his eclectic blend of jazz, folk, and ambient textures. With his saxophone as his primary tool of expression, Stillman took the audience on a captivating journey through his soul-stirring compositions. His intricate melodies and skillful improvisation showcased his mastery of the instrument, evoking a sense of nostalgia and contemplation. Stillman’s performance set the tone for the evening, intriguing the crowd with his unique soundscapes and leaving them eager for more.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the mosquitoes came out to play, the stage was set for The Smile. The air crackled with excitement as the trio took their positions on stage, greeted by a thunderous roar from the crowd. From the opening notes, it was evident that The Smile’s performance would be different from a normal Radiohead show, eschewing “the hits” to play songs from their brand new album. Blending elements of art rock, electronica, and avant-garde sensibilities, the band crafted a unique sonic tapestry that defied categorization and presented the crowd with a celebration of artistic freedom and experimentation. Yorke’s haunting vocals, guitar and piano, Greenwood’s virtuosic guitar and bass work, and Skinner’s masterful drumming formed the backbone of their mesmerizing sound, with the band members trading instruments in between songs like a game of musical chairs.

The Smile’s setlist was a carefully curated journey through their musical landscape, kicking off with an improvised version of “Pana-Vision“. The band showcased their latest compositions like “You Will Never Work in Television Again” and “We Don’t Know What Tomorrow Brings“, as well as a reimagined version of Thom Yorke’sFeeling Pulled Apart By Horses”.  Throughout the performance, The Smile’s chemistry was palpable, and each member seemed to effortlessly complement one another, creating a sense of unity and musical symbiosis. The visual aspect of the concert was a treat for the senses. The stage was flanked by an array of vibrant lights fog machines, adding another layer of depth to the performance. The atmospheric lighting enhanced the immersive experience, transporting the audience into a realm where music and visuals intertwined.

While The Smile’s performance was undoubtedly an artistic triumph, there were moments when the experimental nature of their sound may have challenged some listeners, especially ones that came expecting to hear “Creep” or “Paranoid Android“. The intricacies of their compositions, coupled with unconventional song structures, required a certain level of openness and attentiveness from the audience. However, for those willing to embrace the journey, the reward was a rich and rewarding musical experience.

Overall, The Smile’s concert at St. Augustine Amphitheater was a radiant celebration of artistry and sonic exploration. With their innovative sound, masterful musicianship, and enigmatic stage presence, The Smile pushed the boundaries of musical conventions, leaving the audience spellbound. Coupled with Robert Stillman’s captivating opening act, the evening was a testament to the power of music to inspire and provoke thought. It was an experience that will linger in the memories of those fortunate enough to witness this unique blend of talent and creativity.
