America’s Largest 4 Day Festival Is Back and Bigger Than Ever With Some Help From An All Star Lineup – Feature on the Welcome to Rockville Festival at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL

Welcome to Rockville officially became the largest rock festival in the United States this past Mothers Day weekend as over 200,000 fans descended on the Daytona International Speedway to rock out. The crew at Danny Wimmer Presents have once again outdone themselves, serving up a raucous, reverberating buffet of rock, metal, and even hip-hop that caters to every stripe of headbanger. Adding an entirely new stage to the festival, as well as over 25 more bands, the four day festival was jam-packed with bands to see and things to do, ensuring there was never a boring moment in the day.

The weather was fantastic (if not a bit too hot for my liking, but a lot better than thunderstorms!), and the crowds were ready to join in on the biggest rock party in the country! And even if you wanted to take a break from the crowd for a bit, there were plenty of non-music activities to partake in. From the delicious food and beverage options (I particularly enjoyed the Blackened Burger Bar along with my old favorite, Island Noodles) to the cool shops and vendors selling everything from little rings and trinkets to entire guitars and drum kits, there was something for every fan with a hole burning in their pocket. And of course, who could forget the giant band merchandise tent that operated like a well oiled machine, with the large amount of staff making long lines breeze by while you’re staring at the huge collection of shirts on display.

Day One: Classic Metal Juggernauts

Day one of the festival kicked off with a killer lineup that read like a greatest hits mix of hard rock and heavy metal. The venerable Motley Crue headlined the night, bringing their signature blend of glam metal debauchery to the riotous crowd. Despite their years, Vince Neil and company proved they still have the chops to command a festival crowd, blasting through hits like “Shout at the Devil” and “Dr. Feelgood” with relentless energy. John 5 once again proved what a fantastic showman he is as he expertly ripped through their newest track “Dogs of War” followed up by an impressive guitar solo. The gang finished up their time on stage with “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Kickstart My Heart” as the crowd cheered for more.

Also featured that day were the mighty Grandfathers of Heavy Metal, Judas Priest, and Rob Halford still screams like a banshee half his age. Screeching through crowd favorites like “Breaking the Law” and “You Got Another Thing Coming”, the band delivered an amazing show as usual. The spotlight also shone brightly on Kerry King, the guitarist of Slayer, whose new solo venture tore through a set that was both fresh and nostalgic, his guitar work as ferocious as ever. The band played through some tracks from their new album “From Hell I Rise” as well as some classic Slayer hits like “Raining Blood” and “Black Magic“.

Newer bands like Disturbed also got to serenade the crowd, with David Draiman’s commanding voice reminding us why the band reigns supreme in their genre. It was also a very cool moment when the band brought out Heart singer Ann Wilson to perform “Don’t Tell Me” from their latest album “Divisive“. Mudvayne also performed a killer set, with the costumed band blasting though hits like “Dig” and “Not Falling“. Machine Head, August Burns Red and Insane Clown Posse also rounded out the day with their brand of ultra-heavy beats and shock-rock antics, respectively, each drawing their loyal followings.

Day 2: Nu Metal and Beyond

Day 2 shifted gears a bit, but still kept the energy sky-high. Limp Bizkit took the headline slot, and Fred Durst orchestrated a nostalgic trip back to the late ’90s with an impressive performance. Their energetic set was filled with classics like “Hot Dog“, “Rollin“, and “Break Stuff” (which they actually played twice, bringing a bunch of kids from the crowd onto the stage to help them the second time), and the band proved that it still knows how to work a crowd. Limp Bizkit also brought out some special guests, with Riff Raff coming out for “Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz” and Jelly Roll joining them for a riveting rendition of “Behind Blue Eyes“.

And speaking of Jelly Roll, the fast-rising king of southern rap also delivered a genre melding set, closing out the second main stage ahead of Limp Bizkit’s performance. The rapper delivered his chart-topping hits like “Save Me” and “Son of a Sinner“, along with some covers like Toby Keith’s “Should Have Been A Cowboy” and Skynyrd’s “Simple Man“. The night also featured a performance by the elusive Mr. Bungle, featuring the eclectic Mike Patton and thrash-master Scott Ian, providing one of the day’s most avant-garde sets as the band mixed elements of experimental metal, rock, and more. Earlier in the day, Mushroomhead also delivered a mind-blowing set as the two singers jumped into the crowd and crowd-surfed along the stage.

One of the highlights of the day came when rap innovator Tech N9ne delivered a much needed mix-up to Rockville, bringing rapid fire rhymes to the crowd and instantly making dozens of new fans with his exemplary performance, while Russia’s Slaughter to Prevail delivered a bone-crushing performance that highlighted the global reach of metal. Falling in Reverse also brought the heat to the main stage, and Tech Nine and Alex Terrible both came out for a surprise performance of the band’s upcoming single “Ronald” for the first time.

Day 3: Hard Rock Royalty

Foo Fighters headlined the third day, with charismatic frontman Dave Grohl leading the charge as the band stormed onto the stage. The band was supposed to headline the festival two year ago, but had to bow out with the unfortunate passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Thankfully, their old friend Josh Freese was able to take Taylor’s place behind the kit and allow the band to appear at this year festival. Foo Fighters’ set was a two-hour high-octane run through their extensive catalog, blasting through hits like “The Pretender” and “All My Life“, proving once again why they are considered rock royalty.

Earlier in the day, modern legends Queens of the Stone Age brought a hit-filled setlist to the screeching crowd, delivering gritty hits like “Go With the Flow” and “Little Sister“. Greta Van Fleet offered up their brand of Zeppelin-esque flair that captivated younger and older fans alike. “Light My Love” and “Highway Tune” were standout hits, with guitarist Jake Kiszka jamming out multiple solos per song. Primus brought the weird with Les Claypools‘ funky basslines making the entire crowd dance along, and Les seemed to be having a blast and interacting with the crowd. Cypress Hill infused the day with a hip-hop twist, their laid-back yet gritty rhythms providing a cool contrast to the heavier sounds of the day, and A Day to Remember bridged the gap between metalcore and pop-punk, delivering a set that had the entire crowd in a mosh-pit.

Day 4: A Masked Metal Climax

The final day belonged to Slipknot, who (as usual) delivered an intense, theatrical show that had the masked members unleashing chaos with every beat. Featuring the classic 25th anniversary outfits and masks, this was the third ever show with their new drummer Eloy Casagrande, who brought a new heartbeat to the band with his incredible skills on the sticks and skins. Blasting through an old school setlist featuring classics like “Eyeless”, “Before I Forget”, “The Heretic Anthem” and “Vermillion”, Corey Taylor and the boys’ kinetic energy and visceral music were a perfect capstone to the festival.

Other highlights of the final night included Evanescence, as Amy Lee mesmerized the crowd with her soaring vocals, providing a gothic twist to the lineup. Breaking Benjamin and Benjamin Burnley captivated the audience as they launched into fan-favorites like “The Diary of Jane” and “So Cold“. Sum 41 offered a dose of nostalgia with their infectious punk-pop hits, playing one of their final shows ever as a band before they call it quits after one last tour. Enter Shikari’s mix of post-hardcore and electronic music, along with Bad Omens’ melodic metalcore, demonstrated the evolving soundscapes of rock, keeping the genre fresh and forward-thinking. Atreyu, one of the stalwarts of the metalcore scene, blended screaming vocals with melodic hooks in a set that was both aggressive and catchy.

This year’s Welcome to Rockville proved to be the biggest year yet and featured an incredible arrangement of bands, from metal to punk, classic to nu-metal, and everything in between. The festival not only showcased a powerful lineup of seasoned legends and fresh faces but also captured the spirit of a community that binds fans together. Each performance, whether it was Slipknot’s masked theatrics or Motley Crue’s 80’s hair metal, delivered the very best in modern rock and classic metal. With the thunderous music still resounding in their ears, fans left not just with a sense of nostalgia for this year, but also eagerly anticipating what Welcome to Rockville would bring next year.
