August Burns Red Deliver Metalcore Majesty to South Florida
The Metalcore Legends Kick Off Their String of Shows on the “Emo’s Not Dead” Cruise With a Sold Out Intimate South Florida Performance – Photos and Review of the August Burns Red Concert at the Culture Room in Ft Lauderdale, FL
The rainy Florida air outside Ft. Lauderdale’s revered Culture Room crackled with a different kind of electricity as metal fans lined up around the block this past Wednesday, patiently awaiting the opening of the club. Inside the intimate, black-walled venue, a congregation of heavy metal faithful gathered, not just for concert like any other, but for a unique opportunity to witness one of the most revered acts in modern heavy music, up close and personal. Finally, as the doors opened and fans flooded in, ready to see a night of relentless precision and technical worship headlined by the undisputed masters of modern metalcore, August Burns Red.

First up to stir the pot were Royal Hearts, a local act that wasted no time in claiming the stage. Their sound, a blend of melodic post-hardcore and anthemic metal, served as the perfect gateway to the night. Clean vocals soared over riff-driven passages, building a tangible sense of camaraderie and warming the crowd’s voices for the chaos to come. They were followed by the aptly named We’re Wolves, who promptly shifted the evening into a higher, more aggressive gear. Hailing from the Sunshine State themselves, the band unleashed a torrent of hardcore bite, and their stage presence was all kinetic energy—a bulldozer of breakdowns and swagger that had the now-swelling crowd moving in synchronicity, a sea of nodding heads and swirling pits.

By the time the lights dimmed and the signature “U” logo of August Burns Red appeared on the screens, the Culture Room was a pressure cooker, and the moment the opening notes of “Composure” sliced through the haze, the lid blew off. Although the band was down a couple of members due to family emergencies (guitarist JB Brubaker and drummer Matt Greiner were not able to appear, but Texas In July drummer Adam Gray filled in for Matt), the performance was no less impressive, a 90-minute masterclass in controlled fury. Guitarist Brent Rambler was a pillar of intricate harmonies and devastating chugs, fingers flying over frets with a synchrony that defied the complexity of the compositions. Frontman Jake Luhrs was the relentless focal point, his roar an instrument of pure catharsis, his stage presence both commanding and charismatic. Between guttural exhortations, he offered genuine gratitude and messages of resilience, embodying the positive core that has always set ABR apart in a genre often associated with darkness.

The setlist was a career-spanning onslaught, carefully curated to balance seismic new tracks from their latest album “Death Below” with beloved classics like “Your Little Suburbia Is In Ruins“. The pummeling “Backfire” ignited a frenzy, while the timeless melody-within-chaos of “Meddler” had the entire room shouting the lead guitar lines back at the stage. Anthems like “Vengeance” and “Meridian” transformed the floor into a single, heaving organism, where every crowd-surfer and mosher was part of a unified chaos. The Culture Room proved to be the ideal crucible for this experience as there was no barrier between the band and their fans, only a shared, sweat-drenched space where the technical mastery on stage and the passionate response from the crowd became one feedback loop of intense energy. As the final, punishing notes of “White Washed” echoed into the ringing ears of the exhausted, euphoric audience, the message was clear. August Burns Red reaffirmed their throne as progressive metalcore’s most consistent and powerful force and left no doubt that even after two decades, their creative fire burns hotter than ever.
