Strength Beyond the Spotlight
Meet Huntress: Sydney Hunter’s Mission Extends Beyond American Gladiators.
May 20th, 2026
For Sydney Hunter, the spotlight isn’t a destination. It’s a launching point.
Fresh off appearances at Ebony Fit Weekend and preparing for audiences to see her as Huntress on the reboot of American Gladiators, Hunter sounds less like someone celebrating a career milestone and more like someone standing at the starting line.
“It feels like I’m just getting started,” Hunter said. “It feels like Huntress to the world. It feels like Sydney Hunter is announcing herself to the world.”
That introduction comes at a unique moment in her career. She’s simultaneously stepping onto one of television’s most recognizable athletic stages while continuing to build her reputation as a coach, speaker, athlete, and mentor.
For Hunter, all of those roles are connected.
At Ebony Fit Weekend, widely regarded as one of the largest urban fitness gatherings in the country, she hosted a deadlift-focused event that combined competition, encouragement, and community. The atmosphere, she said, was impossible to ignore.
“Once that bar starts moving, the energy is absolutely crazy,” she said. “It’s amazing to see everyone cheering each other on.”

As a self-described deadlift specialist who has lifted more than 500 pounds, Hunter understands that strength extends well beyond physical ability.
She believes confidence often becomes the deciding factor between success and failure.
“Half of it is confidence,” she said. “The mental mindset that you can do anything you put your mind to is what I always want to instill in people.”
That philosophy was built through years of training and competition. While strength may grab attention, Hunter says resilience and mental toughness are what truly separate athletes from the crowd.
“There have been numbers that I’ve hit before where my mental wasn’t locked in, and I didn’t hit them again,” she said. “It wasn’t my form. It wasn’t my strength. My mental wasn’t there.”
The lessons learned under a loaded barbell have become part of her coaching approach. Whether someone is chasing a personal record, beginning a fitness journey, or simply trying to believe in themselves again, Hunter wants them to leave feeling empowered.
“I want them to know they’re proud of themselves,” she said. “At the end of the day, your fitness journey is you versus you.”
That message resonated throughout Ebony Fit Weekend, an event she believes stands apart from many of the fitness expos she encounters in Los Angeles.
While plenty of fitness events offer networking opportunities, Hunter says Ebony Fit Weekend creates something deeper.

“The connections are beyond just that weekend,” she explained. “You create friendships, business ideas, and bonds that continue to grow.”
Those relationships align with the larger purpose driving her career. While many viewers will soon know her as Huntress, Hunter insists the character is not an act.
“Who Huntress is, she’s an absolute powerhouse of a human being,” she said. “That’s who I am. It’s just a dramatized version of myself.”
The name itself carries personal significance. Rather than adopting a completely separate persona, Huntress evolved naturally from her own identity.
“My full name is Sydney Hunter,” she said. “I’m one of one.”
Even so, stepping into the world of American Gladiators came with challenges she hadn’t anticipated.
Competing at an elite level is one thing. Doing it while cameras capture every moment is something else entirely.
“You have to have your game face, but you also have to make sure you’re camera ready,” she said with a laugh.
What impressed her most about the experience was its authenticity.
“It’s real. There’s no retakes. There’s no redos. Whatever happens, happens.”
That authenticity extends to the cast itself. Hunter emphasized that the 16 Gladiators were selected for far more than their athletic accomplishments.

“We weren’t just chosen for our looks or what we can do physically,” she said. “We were chosen for what we can do on camera and the different things we bring.”
She hopes viewers find pieces of themselves reflected in each competitor.
For Hunter, representation remains one of the most meaningful aspects of her growing platform.
As a Black woman competing in strength sports and now appearing on a nationally televised athletic competition series, she understands the impact visibility can have on younger generations.
Among her own inspirations were athletes like Allyson Felix, Serena Williams, and Sanya Richards-Ross.
Now she hopes to provide that same inspiration for others.
“I want to be a positive role model,” Hunter said. “I want girls to know that strength is beautiful. Your muscles are beautiful. Your femininity is beautiful.”
Recently, she returned home to Sacramento and spoke to approximately 500 African American students. The experience left a lasting impression.

“Some of them told me they’d never seen a real superhero before,” she said. “Those moments stay with you.”
The comments reinforced something Hunter has long believed: strength and compassion are not opposites.
One of the biggest misconceptions she encounters about strong women is the assumption that physical power somehow diminishes emotional depth.
“We have a soft side. We care,” she said. “There’s a duality to it.”
That balance is something she actively showcases through her social media presence and coaching work. She wants women to embrace every aspect of themselves without feeling pressured to choose between strength and femininity.
Looking back on a spring filled with major milestones, television cameras, speaking engagements, fitness events, and growing recognition, Hunter isn’t focused on personal accolades.
Instead, she’s thinking about the people she might reach next.
“I want to continue to be a light for others,” she said. “I want to continue helping women become the best version of themselves physically, emotionally, and mentally.”
For someone just beginning her journey as Huntress, that mission may ultimately become her greatest superpower.
As her profile continues to rise, Hunter hopes people remember one simple message.
“Dream big,” she said. “Never let anyone dim your dreams or your sparkle.”
And if they need encouragement along the way?
Hunter says they’ll always have a coach, a mentor, and a big sister in their corner.
