The Black Queen Returns From The Dead In West Palm Beach

A Ghost Emerges: The Fever Daydream Comes True in South Florida – Photos and Review of ‘The Black Queen’ Concert in West Palm Beach, FL

For seven years, The Black Queen existed as a beautiful ghost. The electronic supergroup fronted by the enigmatic Greg Puciato went dormant after their initial 2019 run, leaving fans to clutch their vinyl copies of Fever Daydream in the dark. But last week at the local live music institution Respectable Street in downtown West Palm Beach, the ghost became flesh again. Playing their only Florida date of the tour, The Black Queen returned to the stage for the first time since 2019 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their cult-classic debut, and for the crowd packed into the intimate fog-filled Clematis Street venue, it was a religious experience of industrial sorrow and synth-laden ecstasy.

Before the headliners conjured their magic, the audience was treated to a masterclass in underground electronics. Florida locals Violet Silhouette took the stage first, kicking off the show with an atmosphere of ethereal tension. The post-punk dance group brought what they call “Neuromanticism” to the stage, and their set reminded me of early “The Cure“. The performance was emotionally charged and exuberant, a volatile mix of haunting vocals and infectious synths that warmed up the crowd’s legs for the main event. Next up were Trace Amount. The project of Brooklyn’s Brandon Gallagher is not for the faint of heart. Generating what can only be described as a harsh blend of The Downward Spiral and death industrial, Gallagher delivered a set of pummeling, glitchy soundscapes that rattled the walls of Respectable Street. It was confrontational, mechanical, and the perfect abrasive opener to sand off the edges of the evening.

Finally, when the DJ’s background music dropped for the last time, the energy in the room shifted. Respectable Street, known for its gritty intimacy, felt like a bunker hiding from the end of the world. The Black Queen — featuring vocalist Greg Puciato alongside multi-instrumentalist Steven Alexander Ryan , bassist/keyboardist Danny Lohner and drummer extraoridnaire Chris Pennie launched into Fever Daydream from front to back. Opening with the slow-burn dread of the first track “Now, When I’m This“, the band locked into a hypnotic groove immediately. Even with the constraints of a small stage and a full band setup, Puciato still prowled the stage like a caged animal. Whether he was whispering intimately into the mic during “Ice to Never” or unleashing his signature guttural wail on “Secret Scream“, his voice was the north star guiding the ship. The highlights came early and often. “The End Where We Start” pulsed through the sound system with a relentless, danceable throb, proving that even without a chart-topping hit, this band commands a room. “That Death Cannot Touch” was a particular standout, transforming the venue into a cathedral of reverb and blue light.

Between songs, Puciato seemed genuinely moved by the turnout. Best known for his ferocious work in Better Lovers and The Dillinger Escape Plan, his demeanor in The Black Queen is softer, more introspective—though no less intense. Addressing the crowd, he reflected on the band’s long hiatus and thanked the fans for showing up after such a long time away. Having missed South Florida entirely during their initial run years ago, the energy felt reciprocal. The crowd sang every word back to him—specifically on the crushing, emotional apex of “Apocalypse Morning“. The Black Queen’s stop at Respectable Street was a reunion of freaks, lovers, and outcasts who have kept the Fever Daydream flame alive for a decade. It proved that some absences only make the heart grow harder and louder. Meeting fans after the show, Greg hinted that “there ARE gonna be more” shows, teasing potential new dates and even an upcoming third album  If this is the standard they set after seven years of silence, the future of The Black Queen is blindingly bright.
