Gary Numan’s Heavy, Haunting Vision Electrifies South Florida

The New-Wave Legend Turned Industrial Mastermind Delivers a Masterclass in Dark Gothic Rock to a Sold-Out Crowd – Photos and Review of the Gary Numan Concert at the Culture Room in Ft Lauderdale, FL

By the time the doors of the iconic Culture Room opened last night, there was already a line of darkly-clad, tattooed fans forming a queue around the block as they awaited a chance to see their musical hero Gary Numan up close and personal at the historic, intimate venue. The evening was an exhibition of the evolution of Numan’s unique vision, showcasing not only a pioneering legend in top form but also the rising talents of his support act, Tremours.

Before the Gary’s sonic assault, opening act Tremours prepared the audience perfectly. The Los Angeles-based duo, consisting of Lauren Andino and Glenn Fryatt, delivered a set that was as intense as it was mesmerizing. Formed in 2021, Tremours specializes in a driving blend of shoegaze, dream pop, and psychedelic rock. Andino’s hazy, drifting guitar work provided a lush, ethereal layer over Fryatt’s pulsating drumming. The dynamic between the two was captivating to watch, and their music filled the Culture Room with a rich, textured sound that served as the perfect counterpart to the more aggressive tunes of the headliner.

For the uninitiated, a Gary Numan concert in 2026 is far removed from the solo synth-pop novelty of his 1980 hit “Cars“. While that iconic track made an appearance later in the evening, the bulk of the set was a heavy, immersive, and often brutal exercise in industrial rock. Numan’s current sound evokes comparisons to Nine Inch Nails (ironically enough, the last time Gary played in South Florida was opening for NIN back in 2013), utilizing dense layers of synthesizers, crushing guitar riffs, and Numan’s own unmistakable, haunting vocal delivery. As the lights dimmed and smoke filled the venue, the energy in the room reached a fever pitch the moment he took the stage. Drawing heavily on remixed work from his solo debut “Pleasure Principle” along with his critically acclaimed “Splinter” and “Savage” albums, Numan and his incredibly tight band created a wall of sound that was visceral.

The newer material, dealing with themes of dystopia and inner turmoil, resonated deeply with the crowd, which spanned generations—from fans who remember his “Telekon” tour to younger converts drawn to his darker, more aggressive style. The setlist touched on songs all throughout his storied career, and we even got to hear a few Tubeway Army songs in the form of “Down in the Park” and “Are Friends Electric?“. Gary also brought out his daughter Raven Numan to perform her song “Nothing’s What It Seems” together, while classic New-Wave era songs like “Metal” and “Cars” were reimagined through the filter of his current band’s heavy sound.

As the night concluded with a thunderous encore of “Ghost Nation” and “The Fall” — more tracks from his heavier industrial era — it was clear that Gary Numan, now a veteran of over 45 years in the business, continues to push the envelope forward, refusing to become simply a nostalgia act like so many of his “stuck in the 80’s” contemporaries. His performance at the Culture Room was a powerful statement from an artist who has consistently fought against the grain, and the sold-out crowd left no doubt that his cult following is as strong as ever. And for the lucky fans who packed the intimate Ft. Lauderdale venue last night, it was a reminder that Gary Numan remains a singular, vital force in music and of his lasting influence on modern alternative and metal.
