Delray Beach Open Shines with First Round Thrillers

Arnaldi’s Completes Epic Turnaround, Borges’ Gritty Win Highlight Opening Matches!!
February 12th, 2024
Matteo Arnaldi of Italy holds off Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan after losing the first set 4-6 in their first ever encounter. In the first set, Matteo had an inconsistent serve, with a few aces but a low percentage of successful first serves. Yoshi capitalized on Matteo’s second serves, creating six break point opportunities. Although Yoshi only converted one of them, it was enough for him to win the first set.
The second set was evenly matched, with each player winning 50% of the points. It featured entertaining exchanges and net approaches, and Yoshi came close to securing the set, but ultimately lost 6-4.
Arnaldi completed the come from behind victory with a 6-3 3rd set in the first-round of action. His powerful 21 aces were definitely a difference maker as he moves on to the second round. Nishioka on the other hand failed to get an ace and managed just 17 winners compared to Arnaldi’s 50.
In an earlier match, Portugal’s Nuno Borges emerged victorious against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (1).
The seasoned Nuno Borges faced off against the young talent, Gabriel Diallo, in their first-ever head-to-head encounter. Nuno showcased a strong performance, maintaining a high first serve percentage that consistently applied pressure on the initially erratic Diallo. Nuno quickly gained a 2-0 lead, and Diallo struggled to mount any significant resistance throughout the first set.
In the second set, Diallo displayed improved form, utilizing his superior athleticism and flashy skills to engage in a highly competitive exchange with Nuno. Despite Diallo’s attempts to level the match, coming close at 4-5 and 5-6, he failed to convert. A prolonged and intense deuce ensued during Diallo’s serves, featuring impressive volleys and ground exchanges that had the audience on the edge of their seats. Fans fervently supported the young player, who responded by maintaining excellent form. The second set extended to a tiebreaker, where Nuno’s experience ultimately prevailed, capitalizing on several unforced errors by Diallo.
