The Bodyguard Brings Generations Together

The Music, The Magic, The Emotion: Whitney Houston’s Spirit Soars in The Bodyguard Stage Adaptation.

June 7th, 2025

I had the pleasure of attending The Bodyguard: The Musical at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, and what made the night even more special was sharing it with my 17-year-old daughter, Nina-Simone. We made it a father-daughter date night, and watching her light up during the performance reminded me how truly timeless great storytelling can be.

Adapted from the hit 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard has been brilliantly reimagined for the stage with a book by Alexander Dinelaris (Academy Award-winner for Birdman). From the moment the curtains rose, the energy was palpable. The creative team behind the production clearly poured their heart into translating the movie’s suspense, romance and musical power into a compact, compelling theatrical experience. The use of lighting, sleek set transitions and pulsing sound design created a cinematic feel that pulled the audience right into the world of the story.

The plot, for those unfamiliar, revolves around a famous pop star under threat and the stoic bodyguard hired to protect her. But at its core, The Bodyguard is about the fragile boundaries between fame and privacy, duty and emotion, and the intense connections that can form under pressure. The stage adaptation doesn’t just echo the film, it elevates it.

The cast was truly outstanding. The actors delivered powerful performances, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. I was especially impressed by how well the cast captured the emotional nuances of their characters. Hearing Whitney Houston’s songs during the show brought me back to her incredible talent and the powerful artist she was. Her voice was iconic, and listening to her songs live in the theater reminded me of her legacy.

Ta-Tynisa Wilson, a finalist on American Idol was amazing. Her voice was incredible, and her energy on stage was contagious. Seeing her perform live was a highlight of the night and further proof of the talented cast brought together for this production.

For my daughter Nina-Simone—who had never seen the film—this was a completely fresh experience. She was captivated from start to finish, reacting with wide-eyed excitement at every plot twist and swaying to the music during the high-energy numbers. Seeing her connect so deeply with a story and music from a previous generation was touching. It was proof that The Bodyguard’s themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice are universal and ageless.
The play did a wonderful job of balancing action, music  and romance. It reminded me how important it is to share these moments across generations. In a world full of distractions, sitting beside my daughter, watching her laugh, react, and fall in love with live theater that was the real highlight.

If you have the chance to see The Bodyguard on stage, especially during its run in South Florida, don’t hesitate. It’s an unforgettable night of heart-pounding drama, emotional resonance, and iconic music. Whether you’re a longtime Whitney fan or brand new to the story, this production will stay with you long after the final bow.
