Knocked Loose & Denzel Curry Turn Fort Lauderdale Into a Hive Mind of Chaos
Kentucky Sluggers Knocked Loose and Hometown Hero Denzel Curry Prove That Hardcore and Hip-Hop Go Together Like Syrup and Waffles – Photos and Review of the “Hive Mind” Tour at the FTL War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Even though the weather outside the FTL War Memorial Auditorium was frightful, thousands of fans braved the storm to turn the inside of the venue into a pressure cooker of kinetic energy on Saturday night as the “Hive Mind” tour rolled into town. The co-headlining bill of Knocked Loose and Denzel Curry promised a collision of hardcore ferocity and hip-hop intensity, and the ecstatic crowd was primed for the crossover chaos. With support from Boundaries and Superheaven, the evening was a carefully curated descent into heavy music’s many fractured lanes, with each act building toward the thunderous climax.

Boundaries opened the night, and the Connecticut hardcore outfit wasted no time in establishing the evening’s aggressive baseline, tearing through a set that leaned heavily on their newest album “Yearning: The Unbeautiful After“. Tracks like “My Body Is a Cage” and “Turning Hate Into Rage” served as a brutal wake-up call for early arrivers, their jagged riffs and pummeling rhythm section setting a ferocious tone. The pit opened almost immediately, a swirl of bodies signaling that this was not a night for passive observation. Boundaries delivered the kind of uncompromising, no-frills performance that hardcore purists crave, and they earned a hearty response from the Florida crowd

Superheaven followed, offering a dynamic sonic shift that showcased the tour’s impressive range. The Pennsylvania heavy shoe-gaze quartet brought a dense, melodic wall of sound that felt both nostalgic and immediate. Their set, drawn from a catalog of shimmering, distortion-drenched anthems like “Leach” and “Youngest Daughter“, provided a change of pace, allowing the mosh-pitters and crowd-surfers a brief moment of respite to catch their breath. Despite the genre’s name, the band’s live energy was incredible, with the twin-guitar attack creating a lush, cavernous atmosphere that filled the auditorium. Superheaven’s set was evidence that heaviness can be as much about atmosphere and emotion as it is about aggression and volume.

Then came the night’s co-headliner: South Florida native Denzel Curry, whose fiery rhymes transformed the room into a different kind of furnace. Backed by a stripped-down, bass-heavy DJ setup and two inflatable “Hive Mind” statues, Curry commanded the stage with the charisma and precision of a seasoned veteran that belied his age. He tore through a hit-laden set that spanned his career, from the frantic energy of “RICKY” and “Walkin” to the visceral punch of “Ultimate“. The hardcore kids in the crowd defied expectations and matched his energy: moshing, crowd-surfing and screaming every word back at him. Curry’s performance was a perfect reminder of his unique position in rap—an artist whose experimental production and aggressive delivery make him a natural fit on a bill like this, and this cross-pollination of audiences was a beautiful thing to witness.

The night’s most anticipated moment arrived when Knocked Loose took the stage. From the opening strains of “Deep in the Willow” the Kentucky hardcore outfit tore the roof off the venue in a showcase of controlled chaos. The floor erupted into a frenzied, swirling pit as the band tore through a setlist of fan favorites, including “Mistakes Like Fractures“, “Don’t Reach For Me“, and “Everything Is Quiet Now“. Frontman Bryan Garris’s piercing shrieks cut through the dense wall of sound, while the band’s rhythmic precision never wavered. Matt McDougal of Boundaries came out on stage again for “Billy No Mates“, and the band’s intensity didn’t slow down for a single moment as the floor remained in constant motion, with crowd-surfers and walls-of-death galore.

The pinnacle of the evening, however, was the moment Denzel Curry re-emerged from the wings to perform “Hive Mind” alongside the band. The collaboration track (and the namesake of the tour) was a visceral fusion of Curry’s rapid-fire flow and Knocked Loose’s crushing breakdowns. The crowd lost its collective mind, a singular moment of unity that encapsulated the entire night’s electric atmosphere. The band finished their time on stage with “Suffocate” and of course the viral “Counting Worms“, the entire building screaming back “ARF ARF” in unison. As the final notes of the breakdown rang out through the War Memorial Auditorium, it was clear that this night’s performance was a bold, brilliant statement that the boundaries between heavy music’s sub-genres are meant to be broken.
