ZZ Top & Lynyrd Skynyrd Rock the House
The Legendary Southern Rock Bands Kick Off the “Sharp Dressed Simple Man” Tour in South Florida – Photos and Review of the Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Concert at the iThink Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL
In what can only be described as a legendary night of Southern rock and blues, this Friday the iThink Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach played host to an absolutely epic double bill featuring the iconic Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. With the soulful tunes of Uncle Kracker opening the show, the evening was a celebration of timeless classics, masterful blues-rock musicianship, and an undying love for live rock ‘n’ roll that left the audience in awe.
Kicking off the festivities, Uncle Kracker took the stage with his unique blend of country, rock, and pop sensibilities. As the opening act, he had the daunting task of warming up the crowd for the rock titans that were to follow, and he did not disappoint. Armed with his signature raspy vocals and catchy melodies, Uncle Kracker opted for a set filled with famous covers that effortlessly connected with the audience, engaging with them in sing-alongs and setting a laid-back, feel-good vibe that perfectly suited the warm Florida evening. The ex-Kid Rock band member regaled the crowd with tales of his time in Detroit and in the band, and we even got to see a version of “All Summer Long” which he helped write.
With the crowd suitably primed, it was finally time for the main event. Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the pioneers of Southern rock, made their grand entrance to a thunderous ovation from the waiting crowd. Despite the passage of time, the band proved they still had that undeniable magic that has captivated audiences for decades. As the opening chords of “Workin’ for MCA” rang out, the amphitheater erupted into a sea of excitement and nostalgia. Led by Johnny Van Zant’s powerful vocals and the infectious energy of guitarist Rickey Medlocke, Lynyrd Skynyrd delivered a setlist filled with their greatest hits like “That Smell“, “Simple Man” and “Sweet Home Alabama” that had the audience singing and swaying along.
The emotional highlight of the night came during the encore, when the band paid a touching tribute to the late Ronnie Van Zant and other original members of the band who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in 1977. As images of the fallen legends flashed on the screens, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed “Free Bird,” a song that has become synonymous with their enduring legacy. The hauntingly beautiful guitar solo and heartfelt vocals paid homage to the past while celebrating the present, creating a powerful moment of unity and remembrance for the band and the crowd.
After the electrifying performance by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the stage was set for the second half of the incredible double bill – ZZ Top. Dressed in their trademark beards and shades, the trio wasted no time in showcasing their blues-infused rock prowess as they kicked off the set with “Got Me Under Pressure“. With their impeccable musicianship and a stage presence honed over decades, ZZ Top delivered a tight, bluesy set that had the crowd grooving along to hits like “Sharp Dressed Man“, “Legs” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’.” The band did an absolutely incredible job (especially considering how long they’ve been at it), and although the late Dusty Hill’s presence was sorely missed, his long-time friend (and band’s guitar tech) Elwood Francis did an amazing filling his shoes.
The band’s chemistry and camaraderie were evident throughout their performance, as they effortlessly navigated through their extensive catalog, demonstrating why they remain a force to be reckoned with in the world of rock ‘n’ roll. Billy Gibbons’ distinctive guitar solos and gravelly vocals, combined with Dusty’s groovy bass lines expertly played by Elwood and Frank Beard’s powerhouse drumming, created a musical tapestry that was both mesmerizing and infectious.
As the night drew to a close, the fans left the iThink Financial Amphitheater with hearts full of joy and gratitude for witnessing two legendary bands in top form. Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top had proven once again that their music stands the test of time, continuing to inspire generations of rock enthusiasts. The concert was a testament to the enduring power of Southern rock and blues and a reminder that the spirit of classic rock ‘n’ roll is alive and well.
