Charged Up: Miguel Zulueta Talks Playoffs, Pressure, and the Power of Simplicity

Few teams carry as much weight—and confidence—as the defending champion Miami Chargers as the Battle Court Jai-Alai season nears its playoff stretch. Miguel Zulueta, a co-owner, representing both Lifestyle Miami and the Chargers, shared his thoughts on the intensity of the competition, the team’s mindset, and the growing excitement around the league.

“It was a hell of a match,” Zulueta said, reflecting on a fierce battle between two top-tier players. “Soroz is one of the best in the league, and our guy’s a warrior. You can feel the energy. It’s hard matches all around, but we keep pushing.”

With back-to-back championships under their belt, the Chargers are no strangers to the pressure of defending their title. But according to Zulueta, they’re embracing the challenge with calm confidence.

“We’ve won two titles and we’re going for our third,” he said. “Everyone’s gunning for us, and that’s only made us sharper. I always say, menos es más—less is more. We keep it simple, do what we do well, and feed off the crowd.”

Zulueta emphasized how the competition is only intensifying as the playoffs draw closer.

“Everyone’s elevating their game,” he said. “The scores reflect it. There’s more focus, more excitement. And the league is really growing. With new investments and expansion, everybody’s raising their level. We all want to stay in Miami and keep growing this thing.”

That momentum is being fueled not just by players, but also by an impressive roster of team owners. Local sports figures and world champions alike are getting involved—adding credibility and buzz to a league that’s quickly finding its footing in the Miami sports scene.

“It’s exciting,” Zulueta said. “When you’ve got owners like Udonis Haslem—a world champion in basketball—you want to raise your game. That kind of competition, that kind of energy, it pushes all of us.”

With the playoffs around the corner, the Miami Chargers aren’t just hoping to defend their title—they’re aiming to define the legacy of Battle Court’s modern era. And with leaders like Zulueta at the forefront, they’re doing it one simple, focused match at a time.

Fireballs GM Nina Blechman Talks Playoffs, Player Growth, and the Power of Social Media

As the Battle Court Jai-Alai season nears its end and the playoffs loom, the energy inside Magic City Fronton is unmistakable. With teams pushing harder than ever, the action on the court has been electric. Fireballs General Manager Nina Blechman shared her thoughts on the season’s success and the evolution of the sport.

“It’s been a very exciting season,” Blechman said. “There’s a lot of great highlight being played. All these teams are strong, and once it gets to playoffs, anything can happen—just like in any other sport.”

Indeed, the level of intensity on the court has felt almost playoff-like in recent matches. When asked whether any changes in training or conditioning have contributed to the uptick in performance, Blechman pointed instead to the players themselves.

“I don’t think the practice regimen has changed much,” she explained. “We’ve just brought in new players who’ve been playing since they were kids. The talent level is getting better, and that makes the matches even more exciting.”

For Blechman, her passion for the sport goes beyond the role of general manager. A longtime fan, she recalled going to Dania to watch Jai-Alai in its earlier days, during its heyday in the 1990s and early 2000s. Her family’s connection to the game deepened when her son became one of the announcers at Magic City. That involvement soon grew into her current role as GM of the Fireballs.

“That’s how we became involved,” she said. “We’ve enjoyed being part of it ever since.”

What’s most exciting for Blechman is how Battle Court is reshaping the sport to appeal to a new generation.

“This format is definitely more relatable to younger fans,” she noted. “My generation understood all the Quinella betting and the traditional system. But younger audiences understand this team-based, fast-paced version better—and that’s where it has to go.”

Blechman also highlighted the role of social media in the sport’s recent resurgence.

“Social media is critical,” she emphasized. “It’s the younger generation that’s going to carry this sport forward, and that means meeting them where they are.”

As the Fireballs gear up for the playoffs, the momentum is clear—and with leaders like Blechman helping guide the next phase of the sport, the future of Jai-Alai looks brighter than ever.
