Tool Delivers A Double Dose of Psychodelic Metal to Florida
The Masters of Progressive Metal Bring Two Nights Of Mind-Blowing Madness to South Florida – Review and Photos from the Tool concert at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida
The anticipation in the air was palpable this week as Tool fanatics took over the iconic Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL while they eagerly awaited two nights of sonic mastery from their heroes. Lined up long before the doors had even opened just for the opportunity to see their favorite band (and for a chance to get one of those beautiful posters), the casino floor was filled with the band’s loyal followers, some of whom flew hundreds of miles for the chance to see the band two times in such an intimate venue. Tool is a band renowned for pushing the boundaries of progressive rock and metal, and have have a hardcore fanbase that follows them show to show reminiscent of the way “Deadheads” would follow Jerry Garcia around the country. Adding to the excitement was the exemplary opening act Elder, who set the mood for the unforgettable musical journey the crowd was about to experience.
While the air was abuzz with excitement and anticipation for Tool’s legendary live performance, starting off the night was Elder, a sludgy progressive rock band with a distinct sonic palette. Warming up the crowd with a captivating performance, their doomy riffs and experimental approach to sound landscapes served as an excellent precursor to the main even. The band reminded me of a combination of The Sword and Sunn O)), and I can definitely see this band getting a lot bigger thanks to the exposure that opening for one of the biggest bands in the world will get them.
Finally, after Elder finished their excellent set, the lights dimmed and the crowd began to roar with excitement. Tool finally took the stage with their usual aura of mystique, each individual member coming out one at a time to a humongous cheer. Kicking off both nights with Fear Inoculum, Adam, Danny and Justin showcased their legendary musicianship front and center while Maynard loomed in the shadows of the background, preferring to let his infamous voice be the most prominent part of the performance. Flanked by a giant LED screen and an army of lights, lasers and fog machines, the visual aspect of the show was just as important as the sound. One of my favorite things about a Tool concert is that you’re guaranteed a good show no matter how far away you are, because the lighting and visuals are so impressive and often best appreciated at a distance. And because this was such an intimate venue to begin with, every seat felt like the front of the house as even the top rows got a laser light show for the ages.
Each night’s setlist was a carefully curated journey through Tool’s discography, featuring both classics and tracks from their latest album Fear Inoculum. As the band plowed through fan favorite rarities like Rosetta Stoned and Jambi, the stage came alive with mesmerizing visuals, intricate lighting, and the unmistakable presence of Maynard James Keenan. But the best part was that for people that attended both nights, the setlists were different enough to where each show felt like a unique experience instead of a re-run (and the fact that they are able to have such a tightly choreographed show while still having a fluid setlist is all the more impressive and another testament to the band’s musical mastery.
Throughout the night, the band’s technical prowess and cohesion were on full display, captivating the audience with every note. Maynard’s enigmatic stage presence, coupled with the instrumental virtuosity of Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey, created a sonic tapestry that transcended a mere concert – it was a collective experience of musical brilliance. The crowd became an integral part of the performance, with fans singing along, cheering, and immersing themselves in the musical waves. You could tell the band’s music, known for its introspective and thought-provoking themes, resonated deeply with the audience based on how emotional everyone got during the concert. The atmosphere inside the Hard Rock Live was electric, fostering a sense of connection among concertgoers who shared in the collective euphoria.
As the final notes reverberated through the venue, it was evident that Tool’s performances at Hard Rock Live were a transcendent experience. The combination of the venue’s intimate atmosphere, Elder’s opening act, and Tool’s unparalleled musical mastery created a night that will linger in the memories of fans for years to come. The two-night spectacle in Hollywood, Florida, was not just a concert; it was a sonic journey into the extraordinary world of Tool’s music that nobody in attendance will soon forget.
