The Cavalera Brothers Celebrate “Schizophrenia”

A Night of Thrash and Chaos: “Cavalera” Reigns Supreme As The Brothers Reunite to Play “Schizophrenia” – Photos and Review of the Cavalera Concert at the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale
The Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale has long been a renowned local haven for metalheads where fans get to see their favorite bands up close and personal, and this past Tuesday it became the epicenter of thrash metal madness as the legendary “Cavalera” took the stage. The band (the renamed “Cavalera Conspiracy” led by reunited brothers Max and Igor Cavalera as they play the early albums of their original band Sepultura) delivered a blistering performance that celebrated their iconic 1987 album “Schizophrenia” in its entirety. With a lineup of ferocious opening acts—MRSA, Dead Heat, and Necrot—the night was a relentless onslaught of riffs, beats, and pure metal energy.
The evening kicked off with MRSA, a local South Florida band led by masked singer Dean Corpse that perfectly set the tone for the night with their raw, unrelenting sound. Their blend of grindcore and horror-infused metal was the perfect primer for the chaos to come. The crowd, though still filing in, responded with headbanging and raised fists, signaling their approval for the band’s aggressive delivery. One of the standout songs from their set was “Leprechaun” (based on the cult classic horror movie, like many of their songs), and even though their set was a bit short it was clear to see that they left a lasting impression on the audience.
Next up was Dead Heat, a California crossover metal outfit that brought old-school hardcore intensity to the stage. Their razor-sharp riffs and relentless tempo kept the energy high, and their stage presence was a reminder of why thrash metal has remained a dominant force in the metal world for decades. Tracks like “Endless Torment” and “Pay the Toll” showcased their ability to balance technical precision with unbridled aggression.
The final opener, Necrot, brought a death metal edge to the night. Hailing from Oakland, California, the trio unleashed a torrent of brutal riffs and pummeling drums that left the audience in awe. Their set was a masterclass in death metal, with songs like “Stench of Decay” and “Drill the Skull” demonstrating their ability to craft dark, atmospheric, yet utterly crushing music. By the time Necrot left the stage, the crowd was fully primed for the main event.
Finally, as the lights dimmed once again and the unmistakable intro to “Schizophrenia” began, the tension in the room erupted into cheers. Max and Igor Cavalera, the architects of Sepultura’s early albums, took their places with an air of authority, flanked by Travis Stone handling second guitar duties and Max’s son Igor Amadeus Cavalera on the bass guitar, perfectly complementing the band’s family-focused vision.
From the first notes of “From The Past Comes The Storms”, it was clear that this was going to be a night to remember. Playing “Schizophrenia“ in its entirety was a treat for longtime fans, many of whom had grown up with the album and considered it a cornerstone of thrash metal. Tracks like To the Wall and Escape to the Void sounded as fresh and ferocious as they did in 1987, with Max’s guttural vocals and Igor’s thunderous drumming driving the chaos. The band’s chemistry was clearly visible, and their passion for Sepultura’s early sound was evident in every note.
Highlights of the set included Inquisition Symphony with its haunting intro and explosive payoff, and R.I.P. (Rest in Pain), a track that remains a mosh pit anthem to this day. The crowd responded with unbridled enthusiasm, surging forward with every riff and chanting along to every lyric. The band also sprinkled in a few surprises at the end, including a medley of deep cuts Beneath the Remains/Arise/Desperate Cry and fan favorite “Troops of Doom” from their early catalog, ensuring that even the most die-hard fans left satisfied, and they also pulled out a Slayer cover in the form of “Black Magic” as the ultimate finishing move.
For Max and Igor Cavalera, this tour is more than just a celebration of “Schizophrenia”—it’s a testament to the brothers’ enduring influence on the thrash metal genre. The album, which marked a turning point in Sepultura’s (and their) career, showcased their ability to blend raw aggression with intricate songwriting, and its impact can still be felt in the work of countless bands today. At the Culture Room, that legacy was alive and well, as fans of all ages came together to honor the music that shaped their lives.
