From Legendary Mentors to Artistic Evolution: Judith Hill on Finding Her Voice, Defying Boundaries and Creating Meaningful Music.

December 19th, 2024

Judith Hill is an artist who leaves a lasting impression, captivating audiences with her passionate performances and versatile artistry. A recent conversation with the singer-songwriter shed light on her creative process, inspirations, and future ambitions.

A few months back I got to see Hill take the stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Curacao, she delivered a performance that was nothing short of mesmerizing. Reflecting on the magic of her live shows, she shared, “The stage is this sacred place where you’re able to build energy in a way that’s transformative. I love using my voice to travel through blues, funk, and soul, creating arrangements that build momentum and take people on a journey.” Her commitment to authenticity resonates deeply with audiences, creating an experience that feels real and emotionally charged.

Judith attributes her musical roots to a rich upbringing surrounded by legendary influences. “My parents were both musicians, and I grew up immersed in funk and gospel music,” she said. “Sly and the Family Stone and church music were huge parts of my life. That spiritual euphoria of connecting through music is something I strive to recreate.”

Her ability to transcend genres stems from a refusal to be confined by labels. “I see genre as a social construct,” she explained. “For me, it’s like using different colors on a paintbrush. I want to paint the picture I envision, whether that’s blues, funk, or something entirely different.” While she embraces this eclecticism, Hill hinted at the possibility of exploring more focused projects in the future, such as a dedicated blues album or a progressive R&B-jazz collection. There’s even the possibility of a Christmas album.

One of Hill’s most personal projects to date is her latest album, Letters from a Black Widow. Born out of a painful chapter in her life, she described the project as a deeply reflective and cathartic experience. “The pandemic gave me the space to process emotions I hadn’t confronted before,” she shared. “It’s a darker energy, but writing it was incredibly powerful and therapeutic.”

For those new to her music, Hill advises intentional listening. “Some of my songs are intense and require focus,” she noted. “Listen in different environments and emotional states. It’s almost like a meditation piece.”

Judith’s journey has been shaped by collaborations with musical legends such as Michael Jackson, Prince, and Stevie Wonder. “Working with Prince, I learned the level of sacrifice and devotion it takes to create masterpieces,” she said. “It’s like being a monk; you dedicate your life to the craft.” Reflecting on her time with Michael Jackson, she shared, “I was so honored to work with him and felt deeply moved by his creative genius and dedication to impact the world through music. Stevie Wonder taught me how to tap into the joy and spiritual connection music can bring.” These experiences have deeply influenced her artistry, inspiring her to pursue excellence in all aspects of her work.

Looking ahead, Hill’s ambitions extend beyond music. She is currently writing a script for a musical film and exploring the idea of integrating theatrical elements into her concerts. “I want to make a film that tells a powerful story,” she revealed. “I’m also excited about a choral album I’m working on, blending choir with funk and soul in a progressive way.”

Despite the ever-changing music industry, Hill’s love for the stage remains unwavering. “For me, the magic is on stage,” she emphasized. “Even in the age of social media, where so much happens online, live performance is where I truly connect with people.”

Fans in South Florida won’t have to wait long to experience her live magic. Hill is set to perform at the 4th Annual Pompano Beach Jazz Fest on January 25th. This free, two-day celebration of rhythm, soul, and culture unfolds against the stunning backdrop of the city’s sparkling oceanfront. With its expanded footprint this year, the festival promises even more delectable food, cocktails, and immersive experiences. Attendees can explore interactive art installations curated by the talented Artists in Residence from Bailey Contemporary Arts, adding a visual feast to the auditory delight.

Hill’s soulful sound will undoubtedly complement the festival’s vibrant atmosphere, uniting music lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike. Her appearance at the Jazz Fest marks the start of a busy 2025 tour schedule, with additional performances lined up on the Smooth Jazz Cruise in February out of Ft. Lauderdale and the Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea festival in March.

Judith Hill’s journey is a testament to her passion, authenticity, and relentless drive to create. With upcoming tours, new music, and ventures into film, she continues to push boundaries and inspire audiences worldwide. “Thank you for all the support,” she said to her fans. “I’ve got a lot of touring coming up in 2025, so stay tuned.”
