Surfrider Foundation Empowering Initiatives

Published

on

Surfrider Foundation’s Florida and Puerto Rico regional newsletter for Spring 2024 highlights the organization’s relentless efforts in preserving and restoring coastal environments.

April 29th, 2024

The first quarter of the year witnessed remarkable dedication from our volunteer chapters across the state and Puerto Rico. Through beach cleanups, habitat restoration initiatives, and engaging with state lawmakers, our chapters have exemplified unwavering commitment to our mission.

Cleaning up the coast!

Beach cleanups play a pivotal role in combating ocean litter, primarily caused by plastic pollution. Through education, community science, and campaigns, we strive to be part of the solution, one beach at a time.

Climate Action Program kicks-off in Miami Beach

The Surfrider Foundation launched the National Climate Action Program, focusing on critical habitat restoration to combat the effects of climate change. Surfrider Miami spearheaded the initiative with a dune restoration project in South Beach, demonstrating the power of community-driven conservation efforts.

The Fight Against Plastic Pollution

The ocean plastic crisis demands urgent action, impacting environments, tourism, and health globally. Surfrider Foundation’s programs aim to eliminate single-use plastics nationwide, with initiatives like The Tiny Turtle advocating for sustainable alternatives and legislative reforms.

Legislative Session Update

Surfrider’s Florida network celebrates significant victories in the 2024 legislative session, including updates to water quality monitoring laws and bans on intentional balloon releases. Despite challenges, our collective advocacy continues to drive positive change for Florida’s ocean and beaches.

International Surfing Day

Save the date for International Surfing Day 2024, a global celebration initiated by the Surfrider Foundation to raise awareness and support for coastal environments. Join us in commemorating this milestone event and stay tuned for local chapter activities.

As we reflect on our achievements, we extend our gratitude to our dedicated volunteers and supporters. Your contributions fuel our mission to protect our precious coastlines for generations to come.
