Mrs. Doubtfire’s Musical Provides Humor and Heart

Rob McClure gives award-winning performance in Mrs. Doubtfire, reminding us all of the power of laughter, love and the extraordinary lengths we’ll go for family.
April 9th, 2024
At the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Mrs. Doubtfire is a ton of fun from start to finish. From the moment the curtains ascend, Rob McClure’s Tony-nominated portrayal as the endearing Scottish nanny enthralls the audience, sharing the stage with his real-life wife, Maggie Lakis. Rob’s performance stands out as one of the most impeccably cast roles I’ve encountered after years of enjoying Broadway productions. Under the direction of the renowned Jerry Zaks, this musical rendition of the cherished film seamlessly intertwines humor and genuine emotion, creating a heartwarming theatrical experience.
McClure’s remarkable performance showcases Daniel Hillard, an unemployed actor, effortlessly shifting from his role as the fun-loving, life-of-the-party dad to the beloved Mrs. Doubtfire, all in a last-ditch effort to stay intimately connected to his children following a turbulent divorce.
The character of Mrs. Doubtfire takes on a life of her own, teaching Daniel invaluable lessons about fatherhood along the way. The result is a hysterical yet touching exploration of the lengths one will go to for family.
Prior to taking on the role of Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire, Rob shined in several prominent productions such as: Beetlejuice, Something Rotten!, Noises Off, Honeymoon in Vegas, I’m Not Rappaport and Avenue Q.
Backed by a stellar creative team, including choreographer Lorin Latarro and scenic designer David Korins, Mrs. Doubtfire boasts top-notch production values that enhance the storytelling experience. The catchy music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, known for their Tony-nominated work on Something Rotten!, add an extra layer of charm to the show.
The production, while modernized from the popular film made famous by Robin Williams features plenty of familiar quips, but also plenty of modern humor, tap dancing and several zany mannerisms.
But perhaps what truly sets Mrs. Doubtfire apart is its universal message of resilience and the power of love. In a world where families come in all shapes and sizes, this musical reminds us that we’re stronger together. Whether you’re a fan of the original film or discovering the story for the first time, Mrs. Doubtfire is a must-see theatrical experience that will leave you smiling long after the final curtain call.
