TGL Turns Golf Into an Arena Sport — and It Works

Inside TGL at SoFi Center: New York Golf Club Takes the Win. TGL’s Reimagining of Golf Continues to Revolutionize the Sport.

January 13th, 2026

Walking into the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens on the campus of Palm Beach State College, it is immediately clear that TGL is not trying to replicate traditional golf. This is golf reimagined as an arena sport, built for energy, accessibility, and constant engagement. From the lighting to the sound to the pace of play, everything points toward a modern, entertainment-forward experience.

The night opened with actor Will Ferrell introducing the competitors, setting a playful tone right out of the gate. The matchup featured Jupiter Links Golf Club versus New York Golf Club, with Rickie Fowler leading off play and giving fans an instant, star-driven entry point into the action.

One of the most noticeable differences from traditional golf is the atmosphere. Music plays continuously throughout the event, even while players are teeing off. There is no expectation of silence at any point. Instead, the environment feels closer to basketball or hockey, where sound and momentum are part of the competition. The result is a relaxed but focused vibe that clearly suits the players. Despite their competitive nature, both teams remained loose and upbeat throughout the night, often smiling and interacting rather than showing visible stress.

TGL’s production excels at keeping fans informed. Massive digital boards dominate the arena, displaying real-time data such as ball speed, launch angle, apex, carry distance, and total distance. When Fowler opened with a drive registering 173 mph ball speed and more than 300 yards of total distance, the numbers updated instantly, making the moment easy to understand even for casual fans.

The visuals go beyond statistics. Hole layouts are introduced with clear explanations that break down strategy and risk-reward decisions. On the Par 5 Boomerang, the broadcast detailed how the fairway curves back and forth, noting that aggressive play “could come back to bite you” due to narrow landing areas, bunkers, and marsh guarding both go-for-it and lay-up options. These explanations demystify golf strategy without ever talking down to the audience.

That accessibility is one of TGL’s biggest strengths. Novices to the game can quickly get a strong grasp of what is happening, from the rules to the options players face on the tee. The rotating field plays a major role here, allowing the short game to be set up properly and making wedges, chips, and putts feel authentic rather than simulated. Team identity is reinforced throughout the night, with lineups and hitting order clearly displayed so fans always know who is up and why it matters. Jupiter Links Golf Club was represented by Akshay Bhatia, who stepped in as an alternate alongside Max Homa and Kevin Kisner, while New York Golf Club countered with Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young, and Matt Fitzpatrick.

While Tiger Woods did not compete as he continues to recover from back surgery, he was still present on the course, actively supporting his Jupiter Links teammates throughout the match. As the face of TGL and one of the most world-renowned golfers of all time, Woods’ presence carried real weight, reinforcing the league’s legitimacy and star power even without him swinging a club.

On the course, Jupiter struck first, briefly building a 3–1 lead. That momentum vanished quickly when Kevin Kisner let the shot clock expire before a 34-foot birdie attempt, resulting in a one-stroke penalty. The infraction, only the second shot clock violation in TGL history, immediately shifted the tone of the match. As play progressed, New York capitalized, and through eight holes the teams were tied 3–3, keeping the contest tight and the crowd engaged.

From there, New York seized control. A 4–0 run swung the scoreboard and gave New York a 5–3 lead heading into Singles, where the format’s emphasis on pace, pressure, and decision-making became increasingly apparent. That advantage continued to grow, with New York extending the lead to 6–3 through 11 holes and 8–3 after 13.

The defining moment arrived at No. 13, when Rickie Fowler rose to the challenge of a Jupiter Hammer throw, calmly rolling in a 14-foot birdie putt worth two points. The clutch conversion sealed the match and snapped a three-match losing streak for New York Golf Club dating back to last season, blending pressure, strategy, and execution into a moment that perfectly encapsulated the TGL format.

As Hole 15, the Par 5 Sterling, was introduced with its sword-shaped design inspired by Scottish course architecture, New York appeared firmly in control. With steady execution down the stretch, New York Golf Club closed out the match, never allowing Jupiter to regain momentum late.

Jupiter will look to rebound quickly, returning to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, against Los Angeles Golf Club. New York’s next match comes at 5 p.m. ET on Feb. 24, when it faces The Bay Golf Club.

Away from the playing surface, the fan experience extended well beyond the competition itself. Guests explored several interactive activities throughout the venue, reinforcing TGL’s positioning as a full entertainment outing rather than a sit-and-watch event.

A Mike’s Hard Lemonade bar remained busy throughout the night, fitting seamlessly into the casual, social vibe of the arena.

Beyond the final score, the bigger takeaway is how comfortably TGL blends competition, technology, and entertainment. It ditches golf’s long-standing “library rules” without abandoning the skill and strategy that make the game compelling. There’s still pressure, still precision, just without the need to whisper or pretend every shot exists in a vacuum. For South Florida sports fans, it felt less like a novelty and more like a glimpse at what golf looks like when it finally decides to have a little fun with itself.
