Ballet for the Modern World Comes to Kravis Center

From Harlem to Your Heart, Dance Theatre of Harlem Spins Tradition into Innovation.
August 15th, 2024
As the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) prepares to grace the stage at the Kravis Center on November 23rd, the company remains committed to its founding principles while continuously pushing the boundaries of classical ballet. Lindsey Donnell, a prominent company member, recently shared insights into DTH’s enduring legacy, its innovative approach to dance, and the profound impact it seeks to have on audiences and communities alike.
Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell, the first Black principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, DTH was born out of a vision to provide opportunities for Black dancers and to make the art of ballet accessible to all. This mission continues to drive the company today. “Our motto is, ‘ballet is for everyone and every body,’” Donnell emphasized, underscoring the inclusive spirit that permeates every aspect of DTH’s work.
The company’s repertoire reflects this commitment to inclusivity and innovation. DTH seamlessly blends classical ballet with modern music and themes, creating performances that resonate with both traditional ballet enthusiasts and new audiences. “We have ballets set to contemporary music like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and even Radiohead,” Donnell explained. This diverse range of musical influences not only broadens the appeal of ballet but also challenges conventional notions of what ballet can be. “People come to our performances and say, ‘I had no idea ballet could encompass this,’” she added.
The diversity of the company itself is integral to its creative process. Dancers from varied backgrounds come together, unified by their shared passion for ballet. “We start our day with a ballet class, which unifies us,” Donnell shared. “We enter with the mindset that whatever someone brings, it’s beautiful and worth celebrating.” This inclusive approach fosters an environment where creativity flourishes, resulting in performances that are both artistically rich and emotionally resonant.
In addition to its groundbreaking performances, DTH is deeply committed to community outreach. The company’s influence extends far beyond the stage, as they actively engage with communities through educational programs and workshops. “We travel all over the country and world, and we’re in schools, we’re in after-school programs, we’re in local dance studios,” Donnell said. DTH’s outreach initiatives often include free workshops, classes, and lecture demonstrations, aiming to make the art of dance accessible to all. These efforts reflect the company’s belief in the power of dance to inspire and bring about social change.
DTH’s performances often serve as a platform for exploring contemporary societal issues. A notable example is “Higher Ground,” choreographed by Artistic Director Robert Garland in 2019, which uses the music of Stevie Wonder to address themes of resilience and social justice. “Our performances often serve as a conversation starter about the climate today,” Donnell remarked, highlighting how DTH’s work encourages audiences to reflect on the world around them.
The company also understands the power of digital engagement in amplifying its reach and connecting with younger audiences. DTH is highly active on social media platforms, using them to share behind-the-scenes content, engage with fans, and promote their performances. Donnell spoke to the importance of these platforms: “We use social media to connect with people who may not have seen ballet before and to show that it’s a vibrant, living art form that’s still relevant today.” This online presence ensures that DTH’s message of inclusivity and innovation continues to resonate with a global audience.
As they prepare for their upcoming performance at the Kravis Center, DTH is set to honor its roots while showcasing its continued evolution. The program will include George Balanchine’s “Allegro Brillante” and “Donizetti Variations,” a nod to the company’s Balanchine roots and the legacy of Arthur Mitchell. These classical works will be performed alongside new choreography by William Forsythe, who is renowned for pushing the boundaries of classical ballet. This carefully curated program is designed to demonstrate DTH’s versatility and its ability to honor tradition while embracing innovation.
Audiences attending DTH’s performance can expect a powerful, emotional experience. Donnell encourages attendees to come with an open heart and mind: “Come expecting to feel something. Feel the energy, feel the vibrancy, feel something new.” Whether through the innovative choreography, the diverse representation on stage, or the thought-provoking themes, DTH’s performances are designed to leave a lasting impact.
As DTH continues to tour and perform globally, their commitment to making ballet an inclusive and accessible art form remains unwavering. The company is not just preserving tradition but actively shaping the future of dance, ensuring that ballet remains relevant and resonant for generations to come.
