As Rob Lake prepares to jet off to West Palm Beach for his eagerly anticipated show at the Kravis Center, he carves out a moment to chat with us. Despite being deep in the throes of creative work for Adele’s spectacular Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, Rob’s passion and enthusiasm for his craft shine through. He opens up about his magical journey, his meticulous creative process, and the enchanting essence of his performances.

Rob Lake’s journey into the magical realm began in the most enchanting way possible—during his childhood. “I started as a kid and basically never grew up,” he says with a nostalgic smile. “I saw a magic show when I was 10 years old, and from that moment, I knew that magic was my destiny. I became utterly obsessed, devouring every magic book in the library, practicing day and night. My relentless dedication must have driven everyone around me mad—friends, family, teachers—all subjected to my endless card and coin tricks. I saved every penny from birthday party shows to invest in bigger, more elaborate illusions. The journey has been one of continuous growth and unwavering passion.”

Rob is renowned for his grand, immersive performances that transport audiences into a world of wonder. He emphasizes the critical role of storytelling in his illusions. “Everything I do is steeped in theatricality,” he explains, his eyes lighting up with fervor. “The theater’s storytelling power is my first love, even before magic. I aim to create a sense of wonder and enchantment, to tap into the unexpected. The real magic happens when the audience feels joy, amazement, and a collective sense of awe. It’s not just about how a trick is done; it’s about the magical experience we share in the theater.”

His acclaim, including being named the world’s greatest illusionist by NBC, is a testament to his dedication and artistry. “Being recognized for my work is incredibly rewarding,” Rob reflects. “I’ve devoted my entire life to this craft, often at great personal sacrifice. I’m rarely home, living out of hotels and constantly on the move. Such accolades make all the sacrifices worthwhile, validating my passion and persistence.”

Rob’s creative genius extends beyond his own performances to designing illusions for high-profile projects, such as Disney’s Aladdin tour and Adele’s concerts. “I thrive on creativity and problem-solving,” he says. “The illusions I create for others allow me to explore new realms and challenges. It’s exhilarating to bring magic to life in different contexts, whether it’s a Broadway musical or a pop concert. Each project pushes me to think outside the box and innovate in ways I never imagined.”

Despite his success, Rob remains driven by an insatiable curiosity and a relentless pursuit of innovation. “I’m constantly dreaming up new ideas and challenges,” he shares. “I never stop thinking about how to enhance my performances. Sometimes, working on other projects inspires me to experiment with new concepts in my own show. It’s all about evolving and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”

One of the most significant milestones in Rob’s career was winning the prestigious Merlin Award at a remarkably young age. “I always dreamt of receiving that award, seeing my heroes achieve it,” he says, his voice tinged with pride. “I never expected to be recognized so early in my career. When I got the call, I was shocked and deeply honored. It validated all my hard work and dedication, especially coming from my peers in the industry.”

Rob’s commitment to magic extends to a profound dedication to entertaining military families overseas. “For 15 or 16 years, we toured some of the most remote areas to bring a bit of home and a lot of magic to our troops and their families,” he recounts. “Performing multiple shows a day was exhausting but incredibly rewarding. The joy and relief on their faces were priceless. It was our way of giving back, bringing a much-needed sense of wonder and community to those who sacrifice so much.”

Creating magic, Rob explains, involves meticulous planning and years of experience. “We anticipate every possible contingency,” he says. “From power outages to technical mishaps, we have plans in place to ensure the show goes on. The audience experiences these moments with us, sharing in the unpredictability and magic of live performance.”

Rob compares the creation of illusions to composing music. “I have a repertoire of methods and effects, akin to musical notes and instruments,” he explains. “It’s about arranging these elements to craft something truly magical. Whether it’s making something appear, disappear, levitate, or teleport, each illusion is a symphony of precision and creativity.”

As Rob Lake continues to enchant audiences around the globe, his dedication to his craft and his ability to create awe-inspiring experiences remain unwavering. His shows are a unique, interactive journey where magic unfolds right before your eyes, making each performance a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether he’s designing illusions for high-profile performances or bringing joy to military families, Rob’s magic transcends the stage, leaving a lasting impact on all who witness it.
