Three Worlds, One Vibe
Gary LeVox, AKON and De La Ghetto Join Forces for “Hold The Umbrella,” A Genre-Bending Global Anthem Set to Heat Up This Summer.
April 8th, 2025
When three powerhouse artists from wildly different musical worlds come together, the result is bound to turn heads. But with “Hold The Umbrella,” Gary LeVox, AKON and De La Ghetto aren’t just turning heads—they’re creating a sonic tidal wave. The track, filmed on April 8 and set for global release May 16, feels like a breezy, feel-good anthem straight out of a Miami summer.
Fresh off Rascal Flatts’ sold-out 25th anniversary tour, LeVox was ready for a new kind of adventure. He describes the collaboration as long overdue—something that felt bold, global, and different from anything he’d done before. The song had been sitting in the vault for a while until AKON added his signature style, De La Ghetto jumped in with his verse, and everything just clicked. “It’s gonna take over the world,” Gary says, confidently.
The video, according to AKON, brings the vibe full circle—mocktails, music, and moments that make you want to kick back and soak it all in. “Real good fun, great energy,” is how he puts it. De La Ghetto echoes that, describing the shoot as a day of pure joy with friends and family, bringing the track’s message to life through movement, smiles, and shared vibes.
Sonically, the track breaks new ground. De La Ghetto, who grew up in Puerto Rico immersed in reggae and Caribbean sounds, says this was the first time he’s heard country and reggae merge in this way—and it felt instantly natural. When he heard AKON’s verse and Gary’s hook, he knew the record had global potential. “Massive,” he says.

LeVox shares that the blend didn’t require overthinking. Their chemistry was immediate, the collaboration effortless. It’s that rare kind of project where every element fits without forcing it.
While AKON is no stranger to global fusion—his career has long been defined by genre-defying, cross-border hits—this track hits home for him. With his new album Not Guilty dropping this summer, “Hold The Umbrella” aligns perfectly with his current sound. He recalls growing up listening to country music in Africa and calls working with Gary a full-circle moment. “I was a huge Rascal Flatts fan,” he admits, adding that it’s a blessing to now be collaborating with artists he grew up admiring.
For De La Ghetto, timing was everything. He was on tour when the call came, and it took a few weeks before he could get into the studio. But once he did, the record became part of his daily playlist—something that inspired his final verse. Despite minor language differences, he says the musical chemistry was seamless, and it felt like they were all on the same page.
Even while touring, LeVox stayed locked in, listening to mixes and staying involved in the creative process. Getting to shoot the video with AKON and De La Ghetto, he says, was the most exciting part—stepping outside his country roots and into something entirely new. But to him, that’s what music is all about: going places you haven’t been, uniting people, and doing something fresh.
At the heart of “Hold The Umbrella” is a message of joy, togetherness, and pure rhythm. The trio agrees that one word sums it all up: unity. Whether you’re laughing, dancing, sipping something cold, or just soaking in the beat—this song is for everyone.
As LeVox puts it, all engines are running at full speed. And when May 16 rolls around, umbrellas might just be the only thing fans are willing to let go of.
