Childish Gambino Brings “The New World Tour” to South Florida

Childish Gambino Captivates His Eager Fans in an Action-Packed Marathon Concert – Photos and Feature on the Childish Gambino Concert at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida

The atmosphere at the Amerant Bank Arena was electric this Thursday as the multi-talented Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino delivered his incredible “New World Tour” to sunny Sunrise, Florida. The tour served as a yin-and-yang moment, as it marked both his triumphant return to the live music stage (and to the South Florida area, where he hasn’t performed in over 12 years), and the retirement of his Childish Gambino moniker. The arena (home to the 2024 Stanley Cup winning Florida Panthers) was abuzz with excitement as the crowd was ready to be treated to an unforgettable night of music and artistry.

Kicking off the festivities that night was Willow, the daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith who has launched quite an illustrious musical career. Stepping onto the stage with confidence and sporting an acoustic guitar, she immediately captured the attention of the crowd. Willow’s set was a genre-blending journey that highlighted her ability to seamlessly merge jazz, rock, and R&B, a testament to her growth as an artist. The last time I saw her, her music was more “pop-punk” oriented, while this concert focused more on her latest album “Empathogen” which had a more avant-garde, jazzy influence.

When the lights dimmed once again and Childish Gambino was set to take the stage, the atmosphere shifted from anticipation to exhilaration. As the strobe lights on the main stage began to flash, almost as a distraction, smoke began to pour onto the small stage in the back of the venue as Donald Glover appeared, sporting a fly leather jacket and LED Helmet combo. Blasting off into the first song “H3@RT$ W3RE M3@NT T0 F7¥“,  the crowd went absolutely insane as Donald walked through the audience, greeting the crowd and signing items as he made his way to the main stage from the back of the venue. Donald Glover was always known for his innovative performances, and this concert was perhaps the apex of what he has accomplished in a live event.

The production for the show was incredible, with more lights and lasers than a Tool concert and even a custom “LED Icicle” rig that lowered from the ceiling and doubled as a video screen for certain songs. Gambino’s ability to intertwine deep, thought-provoking themes with intense visuals and lighting effects made the concert feel like an art installation.Gambino commanded the stage with his unique mix of hip-hop, rock, soul, and avant-garde production as he masterfully performed a mix of his greatest hits like “The Worst Guys” and “Crawl” along with songs from his most recent album, “Brando Stone and the New World“, which is slated to be his last. Continuing with “Feels Like Summer” and “Human Sacrifice“, Glover immersed the crowd in his signature fusion of futuristic sounds and infectious rhythms. While the first half of the set mostly featured newer tracks, the second half was strictly for the old-school fans.

After a small breather while he introduced the band, Gambino masterfully teleported back to the small stage at the rear of the arena, once again signing autographs as he made his way back to the main stage. From there, the setlist flowed seamlessly, showcasing a range of classic tracks from his first few albums, including hits like “This Is America”, “Bonfire“, “Freaks and Geeks” and “3005”. Closing with an encore of “Redbone” and “Lithonia“, Gambino left the stage amidst thunderous applause, solidifying his place as one of the most innovative and daring artists in contemporary music. Willow’s excellent opening act and Gambino’s spellbinding performance made this concert a night to remember.
