Sun, Sweat and Punk Rock: NOFX’s Last Florida Show Echoes Through Time!

Shares the bill with Pennywise, Circle Jerks, Less Than Jake, Sick of it All, Codefendants and the Last Gang.

September 30th, 2023

In a night that will echo through the annals of punk history, veterans and newcomers alike came together in a resounding celebration of the genre’s timeless anthems. The venue was a cauldron of energy, a confluence of generations, all immersed in the echoes of punk classics spanning decades. This wasn’t just a local gathering; it was a pilgrimage. People from far and wide had converged, drawn by the allure of a movement that has stood tall for many years.

The festivities kicked off with a bang as the crowd was treated to a large brew sampling, a foreshadowing of the intoxicating musical journey that lay ahead. Lines stretched endlessly, but the efficiency of the vendors ensured that everyone got their share of the brews without dampening their spirits too much. However, the only downfall was I did miss the Last Gang’s set and most of the Codefendants.

But, when it was time for Sick of it All, I put my cup down and I was all-in for their hardcore punk show. Amidst a sea of black clothing, plaid pants, tattoos, and dyed hair, their stage came alive with raw, unbridled energy. The second they took the stage, they ignited a fervor that left the audience breathless. Their performance was a relentless barrage of punk power, leaving the crowd gasping for air just from the intensity of their showmanship.

Less Than Jake took the stage next, weaving a tapestry of nostalgia with their infectious ska-punk sound. Their set was a journey through time, with throwbacks and singalongs that reverberated through the venue. During “Last One Out of Liberty City,” a testament to the unifying force of music, the crowd formed a counterclockwise circle pit. With the backdrop of a horn section, this was more of a danceable destruction compared to the hard-hitting mosh pit just moments before. And who could forget the playful chaos when toilet paper cannons shot out into the crowd, transforming the atmosphere into a surreal punk carnival?

Circle Jerks, despite their appearance as elder statesmen, unleashed a performance that defied age. Their music resonated with a vigor that could rival any young punk band, leaving the audience in awe of their timeless spirit. Their performance was a relentless barrage of punk power behind hardcore anthems like “Clobberin’ Time,” “Just Look Around” and “Step Down,” leaving the crowd gasping for air just from the intensity of their showmanship.

Pennywise, in their characteristic rebellious fashion, roared onto the stage with anthems like “F**k Authority” and “Society.” They closed their set with a poignant cover of “Stand By Me” and their own anthem “Bro Hymn.” The crowd responded with bodies tossed around in a frenzied circle pit, even in the supposedly exclusive VIP area, a testament to the band’s ability to break down barriers.

And then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: NOFX. Their entrance, accompanied by the iconic cover of “Time Warp,” marked the beginning of a marathon performance that stretched over two and a half hours. The stage was graced by the presence of members from Less Than Jake and Corina from the Dancehall Crashers during “All Outta Angst,” a collaborative moment that captured the essence of punk camaraderie.

Throughout their set, NOFX indulged in banter with the crowd, creating an intimate connection that amplified the experience. The stage became a surreal landscape as shoes, shirts, and even tampons were hurled in tribute, a peculiar yet fitting testament to the band’s legacy. The crowd was treated to so many classics like “Linoleum,” “Leave it Alone,” “Perfect Government,” “The Brews,” “Johnny Appleseed,” Bottles to the Ground,” “Kill All The White Man” and The Decline,” each note resonating with the collective heartbeat of punk aficionados.

In the end, as the final chords reverberated into the night, it was evident that this was more than just a concert; it was a pilgrimage, a celebration of the punk spirit that had united generations. The night belonged not only to the bands, but also to the sea of fans, a testament to the enduring power of punk rock and its ability to bridge gaps and create memories that would echo through time. NOFX we thank you for all the great years and putting on this memorable tour.
