Morbid Angel & Revocation
A Sold Out Final Tour Stop Proves Death Metal is Alive and Well in South Florida – Photos and Review of the Morbid Angel & Revocation Concert at the Culture Room in Ft Lauderdale, FL
On a warm Florida evening, metal-heads gathered at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale for a night of head-banging and moshing to some of the most extreme bands in the genre. The main attractions for the evening were Morbid Angel and Revocation, two bands known for their guttural vocals, technical prowess and blistering performances. The opening acts for the night were Crypta and Vitriol, two up-and-coming bands that are quickly making a name for themselves in the metal scene.
The night started with was Crypta, an all female Brazilian death metal band featuring ex-members of Nervosa. They brought their unique blend of thrash and death metal to the stage, and the crowd was fully engaged with the set, with huge circle pits opening up in the venue. The band played tracks from their debut album “Echoes of the Soul”, which was released in 2021, and the songs sounded even more impressive live than they do on the record. After the absolutely monstrous set was finished, you could hear everyone in the venue talking about how impressed they were with the band, and they were definitely the stand-out surprise of the night!
Next up was Vitriol taking the stage, and they wasted no time in unleashing their brand of death metal on the audience. With a sound that combines the brutality of old-school death metal with the technicality of modern metal, Vitriol put on an intense and captivating performance. The crowd responded with enthusiasm, with many throwing up devil horns and moshing along to the music. I had not heard of these guys before the show, but I will definitely be checking them out further!
As the night wore on, the anticipation for the main acts grew even despite the expertly performed and stunningly short set changeovers. Finally, it was time for Revocation to take the stage, and the crowd was once again filled with excitement. The band has been around since 2006 and has released several critically acclaimed albums, and their performance did not disappoint. With complex time signatures, blistering solos, and brutal vocals, Revocation put on a show that showcased their technical proficiency and musicianship. Even despite being down a guitarist (Dave Davidson broke his arm during the tour a la James Hetfield, and has had to sing only while his co-guitarist Noah Young expertly handled the six-string duties) the band sounded as tight as ever. Smashing through songs like “The Outer Ones” and “Madness Opus“, the band riled up the crowd into a frenzy for their entire set, and even Dave couldn’t resist air-guitaring with his good hand during the solos.
Finally, it was time for Morbid Angel to take the stage, and the crowd erupted in cheers and applause. The legendary death metal band has been around since the early 80s and has influenced countless bands in the genre. It was good to see that guitarist Trey Azagthoth was feeling better after the band had to cut their set short the night before due to a medical issue. The band ripped though a mix of fan-favorite classics and newer tracks from their most recent album “Kingdom Disdained“, and the crowd screamed back every word. With intricate guitar work, thundering bass lines, and brutal vocals, Morbid Angel put on a performance that lived up to their reputation as one of the pioneers of the death metal genre.
The Morbid Angel and Revocation concert at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale was a night to remember for metal-heads in the area. The opening acts, Crypta and Vitriol, set the stage for an evening of extreme metal, and the main acts delivered with powerful performances that left the crowd exhausted and satisfied. For fans of death metal and extreme metal in general, this was a show that will not be forgotten anytime soon, and a show that once again proves that death metal is alive and well in South Florida!
