Brévo Theatre’s The Color Purple Delivers a Soul-Shaking Night of Heartache, Grace and Triumph.

Brévo Theatre’s South Florida premiere of The Color Purple The Musical brought Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning story to the Pompano Beach Cultural Center with a production that felt both intimate and emotionally enormous.

Presented at the venue’s 50 W. Atlantic Blvd. home in Pompano Beach, the musical follows Celie’s decades-long journey through pain, survival, self-discovery and, ultimately, triumph. With a score rooted in jazz, gospel, blues, ragtime and African music, the production gave its cast plenty of room to shake the walls, stir the soul and remind the sold-out crowd why this story continues to carry such power across page, screen and stage.

My daughter and I recently had the pleasure of attending Brévo Theatre’s production, and it was a powerful presentation from start to finish. The intimate theater setting gave the audience a chance to feel fully pulled into the heart of the story. Led by a cast with extraordinary vocal talent, the production filled the room with emotion, humor and powerhouse musical moments. Numbers like “Hell No” and “Push Da Button” brought the audience to life, while the seamless transitions kept the story moving with purpose and energy.

Having seen the film versions before, it was especially moving to experience a stage rendition that felt so connected to Walker’s original book. The narrative differences stood out in powerful ways, especially during the raw second act when Sofia returns home from jail for dinner and Celie finally finds her voice and makes the decision to leave Mister. Those moments gave the production its deepest emotional weight and reminded the audience why The Color Purple remains such a resonant story of resilience, sisterhood and reclamation.

The production also reflected Brévo Theatre’s larger mission. Founded and led by Founding Managing Director/CEO Zaylin Yates, Brévo Theatre is a nonprofit committed to amplifying young Black artists and showcasing underrepresented talent across theatre, dance and performance. That mission was felt throughout the evening, not as a footnote, but as part of the pulse of the production itself.

The audience was completely captivated by this magnificent production, which sets an exciting tone for the rest of Brévo Theatre’s upcoming season. With youth showcases, sharp contemporary comedy, monologue competitions and the return of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity on the horizon, Brévo continues to build itself as one of South Florida’s most meaningful theatrical voices.
