As the sun dipped below the Boca Raton skyline, painting the sky in shades of coral and indigo, the amphitheater buzzed with the relaxed, anticipatory energy of a South Florida night. While the main attraction was legendary bluesman Markus King and his incredibly talented cohorts, the journey into the heart of the music began with a fantastic opening set from a group that quickly made the sprawling venue feel like an intimate club: Penelope Road.

Taking the stage with an unassuming confidence, Penelope Road immediately established a warm, magnetic presence. Their sound, a sophisticated blend of southern blues and rock n’ roll soul, filled the amphitheater with lush, layered textures that reminded me of the Allman Brothers Band. The band’s interplay was a highlight, with shimmering electric guitar lines weaving through a tight, inventive rhythm section. The dual vocalists shared an exceptional harmony blend, their voices wrapping around each other on heartfelt original songs that explored love, loss, and quiet resilience. The crowd, many of whom were clearly hearing the band for the first time, responded with growing enthusiasm, clapping along unprompted and rewarding the set’s closing number with a sustained, genuine ovation.

A subtle shift in the stage lighting and the low hum of a Hammond organ signaled the arrival of the headliner, and from the moment Markus King strode up to the microphone, his vintage Les Paul guitar slung low, the energy in the amphitheater transformed. Opening with the slow-burning, deeply personal “Falling for the Devil”, King’s voice—a phenomenal instrument that evokes the gritty ache of a bluesman twice his age—soared over the rapt audience.

King’s guitar playing was nothing short of spellbinding, and his co-guitarist Drew Smithers was no slouch either as they traded off intricate guitar parts. The solos were not just displays of technical prowess, but stories told with six strings, building from whisper-quiet melodic phrases to roaring, impassioned peaks. The backing band, a tight-knit powerhouse of simmering organ, rock-steady bassist Erik Vogel, and thunderous drummer Jack Ryan, followed his every nuanced move with an almost telepathic connection.
