Ft Lauderdale Lets It All Out With Soulfly and EyeHateGod
The Brazilian Thrash Metal Legends Ignite South Florida With Some Help From Their New Orleans Friends – Photos and Review of the Soulfly and EyeHateGod Concert at the Culture Room in Ft Lauderdale, FL
The legendary Soulfly brought an electrifying experience to the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale last night as they packed the sold-out club full of metal fans hungry for their musical escape. With a powerhouse lineup featuring direct support from New Orleans sludge metal legends EyeHateGod and opening sets from Skinflint and Cleveland death metal upstarts Mutilation Barbecue, the evening was a full-throttle journey through heavy metal’s diverse spectrum, uniting fans of everything from thrash and death metal to sludge and Max’s signature tribal groove metal sound.

Skinflint took the stage first, bringing a unique international flavor to the night. Hailing from Botswana, this power trio delivered a unique fusion of African influences and classic heavy metal vibes. Their performance was both musically engaging and culturally enriching, with driving riffs and complex rhythms that demonstrated their mastery of the metal genre. The band’s stage presence and dynamic style captivated the audience, leaving a strong impression and adding a distinctive sound that set them apart in the lineup and introduced them to many new fans.

The night continued with Mutilation Barbecue, a name that’s quickly becoming synonymous with visceral live performances in Cleveland’s metal scene. The band wasted no time setting an intense pace, ripping through a brutal set that combined old-school death metal riffs with unrelenting breakdowns, much to the crowd’s delight. BBQ’s raw energy and uncompromising sound provided a perfect appetizer for what was to come, warming up the audience with guttural vocals and frenetic guitars.

Next up was EyeHateGod, whose legendary status in the sludge metal world had many fans eagerly awaiting their set. Known for their gritty, feedback-laden sound, EyeHateGod created a thick atmosphere, enveloping the room in dark, doom-laden riffs and raw, tortured vocals. They unleashed a relentless barrage of songs filled with sludge-infused riffs and heavy, plodding rhythms, exuding an intensity that matched the audience’s passion. Vocalist Mike Williams commanded the crowd with a fierce intensity, embodying the angst and nihilism that the band is famous for.

Finally, Soulfly took the stage, led by the ever-charismatic Max Cavalera, whose presence immediately ignited the room as the band kicked off with “Back to the Primitive“. Soulfly’s set was a high-octane mix of their signature tribal metal groove, featuring both classic tracks from their self-titled debut album and newer songs like “Superstition” that showcased the band’s evolution. Cavalera’s powerful vocals and tribal-inspired riffs brought an immersive atmosphere to the performance, with the audience fully engaged in the ritualistic energy Soulfly is known for. Fans erupted to songs like “Bleed”, “Prophecy”, and “Jumpdafuckup”, transforming the Culture Room into a whirlwind of moshing, headbanging, and primal energy.

As the night drew to a close with Soulfly’s final song “Eye for an Eye“, the crowd left exhilarated, having experienced a night of unparalleled heaviness and unity. Each band brought something unique, from the brutal death metal of Mutilation Barbecue to the cultural infusion of Skinflint, the grimy sludge of EyeHateGod, and the tribal intensity of Soulfly. Fans were left buzzing with excitement, no doubt waiting for their next chance to witness the mighty Soulfly.
