Pole Position Pressure: Busch, Briscoe Headline Daytona 500 Qualifying Night
Busch Goes Full Throttle Into History, Finally Parking on the Daytona 500 Pole After Years of Superspeedway Heartbreak.
February 11th, 2026
The cool air that settled over Daytona Beach on qualifying night felt rare for Florida, dipping below 60 degrees as fans filed into Daytona International Speedway with that familiar mix of anticipation and adrenaline that only Speedweeks can deliver. The midway buzzed, hoodies replaced tank tops, and the early-week stakes were already unmistakably high. Because much like boarding a Spirit flight, the Front Big Seats were taken before most even realized boarding had begun.

Qualifying for the Daytona 500 locked in the first four drivers of the week, and the headline belonged to Kyle Busch. In his 21st attempt to conquer the Great American Race, Busch delivered the strongest Daytona 500 qualifying performance of his championship career, putting the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet on the pole with a blistering 183.651 mph lap. It marked his first Daytona 500 pole, edging Chase Briscoe by a razor-thin .064 mph to secure the front row. For Busch, the moment carried both pride and perspective, especially when you consider that the late Dale Earnhardt didn’t capture his lone Daytona 500 victory until his 20th start for the same team owner, Richard Childress. The storyline now writes itself as Busch continues chasing the one trophy that has long eluded him.
While the front row celebrated, relief settled in elsewhere. Corey Heim and Justin Allgaier locked themselves into the field as the fastest open entries, removing the week-long tension that hovers over non-chartered teams. Heim earns his first Daytona 500 start with 23XI Racing, calling the moment nerve-wracking but deeply rewarding, while Allgaier returns for a second consecutive start in the JR Motorsports Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., this time with the ability to focus on race preparation rather than simply racing his way into the show.

The pressure now shifts squarely to the Duel qualifying races, where several drivers remain in must-perform territory. Corey LaJoie, Chandler Smith, and Casey Mears headline the bubble in the first Duel, while Anthony Alfredo, BJ McLeod, and JJ Yeley fight for the final transfer spot in the second. The Duels annually bring their own brand of tension, serving less as exhibitions and more as survival races where one mistake can erase an entire offseason’s worth of preparation.
Beyond the bubble drama, the qualifying session itself showcased impressive manufacturer balance. Four Chevrolets, three Fords, and three Toyotas advanced to the final round, and nine of the ten drivers eclipsed last year’s pole speed, an early indicator that teams arrived with serious superspeedway horsepower. Ryan Preece clocked in third fastest while Denny Hamlin followed in fourth, keeping familiar Daytona contenders firmly in the mix as the week builds toward Sunday’s green flag.

Of course, Speedweeks rarely unfolds without at least one unexpected twist. Noah Gragson saw his qualifying lap disallowed after using his hand to manipulate airflow, violating a newly implemented NASCAR rule. The penalty sends him to the back of his Duel field, a costly reminder that even the smallest details matter on racing’s biggest stage.
From Busch finally claiming his first Daytona 500 pole to open teams exhaling in relief and bubble drivers preparing for their last shot on Duel night, the early-week action has already delivered a compelling start to the NASCAR season. The lights are on, the grandstands are buzzing, and the path to the Harley J. Earl Trophy is officially underway.
