South Florida Gets A Killer Weekend With A Double Dose of the Modern Canadian R&B Superstar – Photos and Review of The Weeknd Concert at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL

The Weeknd’s “After Hours Til Dawn tour has been one of the most anticipated concert events of the year, and his two-night stand at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium proved exactly why. The global alt-R&B superstar delivered a breathtaking, high-energy spectacle that left fans in awe, blending his signature dark & sultry sound with a futuristic, cinematic live production. From the moment the gates opened, you could feel the electrifying excitement in the air as thousands of fans—dressed to the nines in their finest sparkly attire —flooded into the stadium, buzzing with anticipation for what would be a nearly three-hour-long marathon of a journey through The Weeknd’s extensive discography.

The evening began with an atmospheric set from legendary producer Mike Dean, a longtime collaborator of The Weeknd. Known for his work on albums like After Hours and Dawn FM, Dean took the stage alone, surrounded by a wall of synths and smoke machines. His 30-minute instrumental set was a masterclass in mood-setting, showcasing his solo output alongside reimagined tracks by The Weeknd, Ye and Travis Scott remixed with dark, gritty synthwave twists. Fans were treated to haunting, slowed-down versions of Starry Eyes and Popular, with Dean manipulating his modular synths in real time, creating an eerie, cinematic soundscape.

If Mike Dean’s set was a slow-burning prelude, Playboi Carti’s performance was an explosion of raw energy. Bursting onto the stage in his signature rap-punk inspired fashion, Carti immediately had the crowd bouncing as he launched into EVIL JORDAN, his ad-libs echoing across the stadium. Backed by a minimalist yet chaotic light show, Carti tore through hits like LIKE WEEZYSky, and Timeless, sending the crowd into a frenzy. While his set was relatively short (just under 30 minutes), it was the perfect jolt of adrenaline needed before The Weeknd’s grand entrance.

As the clock neared 9:00 PM, the stadium lights dimmed, and the eyes of the giant “sexy robot” that adorned the front of the stage began to glow as a group of dancers adorned in red cloaks (reminding me of the dresses worn by the maids from The Handmaid’s Tale) appeared on stage. The crowd erupted as the opening synths of The Abyss pulsed through the speakers, and Abel Tesfaye AKA The Weeknd appeared on stage between the dancers, bearing a shiny golden mask with glowing blue eyes and his custom gold-encrusted robe. From that first dramatic entrance, it was clear this would be no ordinary concert, but rather a fully immersive sensory experience blending music, technology, and performance art.

The production design of the concert was nothing short of award-worthy. The stage featured an additional “B Stage” in the center of the stadium (with the giant golden sexy robot in the middle), along with an enormous catwalk that extended deep into the crowd, allowing Abel to get close to every part of the crowd. The main stage was covered in impressive set-pieces of famous toppled buildings, and featured a giant LED screen that allowed everyone to get a good view of the action as The Weeknd wandered around. Huge blasts of pyro went off during a good 30% of the songs, flanking the dancers and performers with walls of fire, and rows of colorful lights and lasers lit up the stadium during rest of the tracks. Each member of the audience was also given a special LED wristband that lit up in different colors along with the songs, which enveloped the crowd in a unique, 360-degree light show that they were a part of.

The Weeknd masterfully guided the audience through a career-spanning journey, seamlessly transitioning between eras while maintaining an electrifying energy. The show was a perfect mix of nostalgia and innovation, as he performed tracks from his latest album Hurry Up Tomorrow alongside a plethora of his career-defining hits like the pulsating “Starboy“, enhanced by the dazzling laser show that sliced through the humid Miami night. As the set progressed, he delivered powerful renditions of fan favorites like “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills“, even going out into the crowd multiple times to mingle with attendees and letting a few of them sing some lines. Two of the most jaw-dropping moments came halfway through the set as special guests Playboi Carti and Future came out to sing a few songs, and “Call Out My Name” transformed the stadium into a massive singalong. There were even a few deep cuts (like “Wicked Games” and the dreamy “The Morning“) in the enormous 43-song set that showcased his artistic evolution while paying homage to his early mixtape days.

As anyone with a 9 to 5 knows, the worst part of the weekend is that it has to end, but thankfully this Weeknd ended with an incredible one-two punch for an encore. Performing “House of Balloons” from his first mixtape (a nod to his day-one fans) and what is perhaps his most famous song “Moth to a Flame“, The Weeknd finished up his two night Miami excursion with a bang – quite literally, as fireworks capped off the finale.

Abel has always been a stellar performer, but the “Hurry Up Tomorrow” tour feels like his most ambitious undertaking yet. Every element—from the openers to the production to the setlist—was meticulously crafted to create an immersive, unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experience. For Miami fans, the two night event was something they will remember forever, proving once again why The Weeknd remains one of the greatest entertainers of this generation. If this tour is any indication, his evolution as an artist is far from over—and I can’t “hurry up to see what he comes up with next!
