Leonard Garcia – INTERVIEW

Leonard Garcia Ready to Shine in Showdown Against Jens Pulver.
November 3rd, 2008
Leonard Garcia is back in the spotlight, and he’s not just here to participate; he’s here to dominate. After a brief hiatus from the octagon, Garcia is set to make his eagerly anticipated return against the legendary Jens Pulver, and he couldn’t be more excited about it.
In an exclusive interview, Garcia shared his thoughts on his upcoming fight, his preparations, and what it means to go up against a fighter of Pulver’s stature.
A Hurricane of Opportunity
Garcia’s return to the fight game might have been delayed by an unexpected twist of nature – a hurricane that seemed to follow him to his home in Texas. However, the fighter’s mindset remained undeterred. “For me, the transition was easy,” Garcia said with a grin. “I take a week off, act like I knocked someone out, and then go back home and start training again. The bad news is when I went back home to Texas, the hurricane followed me there too. It was kind of funny.”
A Steppingstone or a Statement?
Garcia doesn’t view this fight as a steppingstone but as his introduction to the 145-pound weight class. He made an impact in his first outing, but he believes a win against Pulver will solidify his place in the division. “I don’t think it’s a steppingstone, but more like my introduction to the 145 weight class. I made a statement my first time out, but with this win, I think it’ll cement my placement in the 145 weight class.”
Preparation and Strategy
When asked about his approach to facing a legend like Jens Pulver, Garcia emphasized the importance of pushing himself to the limit in training. “My goal and my objective were to get tired every session that I trained. If I had to do twenty minutes, then during those twenty minutes, I went all out because when fighting a guy like Jens, you have to give everything that you’ve got. If it goes fifteen minutes, I’ll be prepared.”
As for surprises, Garcia hinted at his submission skills, saying, “I used to win my earlier fights with submissions from my back, so he better be careful if he takes me down.”
Focused on the Present
Despite the allure of potentially fighting other big names in the future, Garcia’s focus remains firmly on Jens Pulver. “I haven’t looked anywhere else but what’s in front of me, and that’s Jens Pulver. I definitely focus on one fight at a time, so right now, I eat, sleep, drink, and think of fighting him.”
Respect in the Fight Game
In a sport known for its intense rivalries, Garcia and Pulver’s mutual respect stands out. Garcia explained, “I think as fighters, we all know and we all train a lot to control what may happen, but all of us understand that all it takes is one big shot or one small mistake. This is a chess game; if you make one mistake, then someone could see right across the board and get you.”
When asked if he ever felt the urge to resort to drastic measures like Mike Tyson’s infamous ear bite, Garcia laughed it off. “Nah man, Mike Tyson is a totally different character, and there’s no way he would be allowed in MMA. But yeah, it’s nothing like that. I have all the respect in the world for any guy that’s willing to step in there and put on a show.”
Looking Ahead
Leonard Garcia’s return to the MMA scene promises fireworks, and his fight against Jens Pulver will undoubtedly be a spectacle for fans. As he continues to hone his skills and focus on his next challenge, Garcia’s determination to succeed in the 145-pound weight class is clear. MMA enthusiasts can catch all the action on fight night and witness whether Garcia can cement his place in the division with a victory over the legendary Jens Pulver.
