Viva Azteca Blends Adventure, Relaxation and Authentic Mexican Hospitality

Viva Azteca by Wyndham Combines Relaxing Resort Days with Unforgettable Riviera Maya Adventures.

July 22nd – 25th, 2026

The Riviera Maya has a funny way of slowing you down.

There’s certainly no shortage of things to do. Ancient Mayan history, underground rivers, wildlife, Caribbean beaches and enough tacos to justify extending your vacation can quickly fill an itinerary.

Yet after only a few hours at Viva Azteca by Wyndham in Playacar, the urge to see everything starts to fade.

Maybe it’s the waves replacing traffic. Maybe it’s the tropical gardens filled with colorful birds and wandering wildlife. Or maybe it’s the tropical drink that keeps appearing in your hand.

Whatever the reason, relaxing here comes easily.

During our stay, Maria from Guest Services explained why she believes so many visitors return.

“One of the things I noticed when coming here is how welcoming Mexicans are,” she said. “They make you feel at home.”

That warmth was easy to notice. Bartenders, servers, housekeepers and activity staff were friendly without making interactions feel rehearsed.

Of course, relaxing doesn’t mean sitting still.

First Impressions

Viva Azteca is smaller than many Riviera Maya resorts, and that works in its favor.

Everything is easy to reach.

“It’s on the smaller side,” Maria said. “It’s homey. You don’t get lost here.”

She’s right. You won’t spend half your vacation figuring out where your room is or studying a resort map just to find dinner.

The smaller footprint doesn’t limit the experience. Guests also have access to neighboring Viva Maya, adding more restaurants, pools and activities.

Tropical gardens connect the guestrooms, restaurants, bars, pool and beach. Coatis wander the grounds, birds dart between trees and iguanas soak up the sun. Agoutis can also be spotted moving through the landscaping. Staff ask guests to enjoy the wildlife from a distance and not feed the animals.

The resort stays active without feeling overwhelming. Families gather around the pool while couples head toward the quieter beach.

It doesn’t take long to settle into vacation mode.

Caribbean Blues

The beach quickly became one of my favorite spots.

Soft sand meets the turquoise Caribbean, with lounge chairs and palm trees lining the shore. Moving between the water, shade and beach bar requires very little effort.

Guests looking for more activity can kayak, paddleboard, sail, windsurf, play beach volleyball or try other included nonmotorized water sports. Equipment is available through the nearby Sports House.

Or you can remain in your chair and debate whether the next frozen drink should be strawberry, banana or pineapple.

Some vacation decisions require serious thought.

A Peek at the VIP Experience

We also experienced Viva’s VIP program.

VIP guests receive orange towels and added perks including reserved beach cabanas, expedited service at select bars, exclusive buffet seating and access to a private rooftop pool and bar at neighboring Viva Maya.

The rooftop became one of our favorite spots. It offered panoramic views, attentive service and a quieter atmosphere than the main pool.

The standard all-inclusive experience offers plenty on its own, but travelers looking for extra privacy and convenience may find the VIP upgrade worthwhile.

Dining Worth Looking Forward To

Food variety was one of the biggest surprises of our stay.

The buffet rotates themed dinners throughout the week, mixing Mexican cuisine with international favorites.

Breakfast included fruit, pastries, Mexican specialties and made-to-order dishes. In the VIP dining section, we also received an expanded menu with additional selections prepared for guests in that area.

Maria explained that dining has evolved over the years. Reservations are generally no longer required for Viva Azteca’s specialty restaurants, giving guests more flexibility. Diners can also sample multiple dishes, while a café and expanded allergy-friendly options provide additional choices.

Three specialty restaurants offer alternatives to the buffet.

Bamboo

Bamboo serves Asian cuisine in a smaller, more intimate setting.

The dishes are beautifully presented without becoming overly adventurous for less daring diners.

It’s an easy place to settle in, enjoy dinner and stay awhile.

Dessert helps.

Xul Ha

Xul Ha keeps the focus on the Yucatán.

It became one of my favorite meals of the trip.

Traditional lime chicken soup led into regional dishes including freshly prepared salbutes. Maria explained that Xul Ha specializes in authentic Mayan cuisine, including cochinita pibil, the Yucatán’s famous slow-roasted pork.

As Viva Azteca’s smallest specialty restaurant, Xul Ha also feels more intimate than a typical resort dining room.

When I asked Maria where she would eat if she were spending the day as a guest, she chose Xul Ha.

“I really like the location,” she said.

After eating there, I understood why.

Miramare at Viva Maya

An eight-to-ten-minute walk down the beach leads to neighboring Viva Maya and Miramare, a large tiki-style Italian restaurant overlooking the Caribbean.

Guests can reach Viva Maya along the beach or through Playacar’s gated community.

That short walk highlights one of Viva Azteca’s biggest advantages: staying at one resort gives you access to another.

A Resort That Knows How To Relax

After days of swimming, exploring and eating, the spa was an easy choice.

A 50-minute massage provided a welcome break from our schedule. The therapists created a quiet, comfortable environment where staying awake became the biggest challenge.

Shaded hammocks beneath the palm trees made getting back up even harder.

The resort also uses refillable water stations instead of placing disposable plastic bottles throughout every room. The water is regularly tested, giving guests easy access to drinking water while reducing plastic waste.

Evenings at Viva Azteca

The resort changes after sunset.

Live music fills the open-air gathering areas before the nightly production begins.

Shows ranged from Broadway-inspired performances and pirate adventures to celebrations of Mexican culture. Colorful costumes, energetic choreography and occasional live vocals kept each night different.

Before the Pirates show, children were invited onstage to dance with the performers.

The biggest applause came during an aerial silk performance. High above the stage, the performer twisted, spun and climbed through the air with impressive strength and control.

Two Resorts in One Stay

Guests at Viva Azteca also have access to neighboring Viva Maya.

The resorts are only a short walk apart but offer different experiences.

Viva Maya’s adults-only pool became a favorite when we wanted a quieter setting. It includes its own bar and provides an easy escape from the busier family areas.

Viva Maya also adds four restaurants plus tennis, archery, a climbing wall and additional recreation.

Then there’s the flying trapeze.

I planned to try it.

Then I got a massage.

Thankfully, my colleague Rob volunteered.

His first attempt wasn’t bad.

His second proved gravity remains undefeated.

The instructors kept everything safe and explained each step. Guests simply sign up before a session to participate.

Rob survived. I laughed. Everyone won.

Across both properties, guests can try padel, tennis, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, beach volleyball, archery, catamarans, windsurfing and the trapeze.

Maria explained that keeping everything running takes coordination guests rarely see.

“Even something as simple as celebrating a birthday or bringing extra towels involves many departments,” she said. “Guests usually only see one or two people, but there’s a whole team working together behind the scenes.”

Maria speaks German and Italian and often assists international visitors when language barriers arise.

The resort’s mobile app also helps guests navigate their stay. It includes restaurant menus, Viva Maya dinner reservations, daily activities, evening entertainment and Kids Club schedules.

Departure day is also easier than expected. Guests can store luggage after checkout, continue using resort amenities and shower near the fitness center before leaving for the airport.

Vacation doesn’t have to end the moment you hand over the room key.

Beneath the Jungle

As tempting as it is to stay at the resort, Maria encouraged us to explore Mexico.

“I always recommend people go out and explore,” she said. “Mexico is such a beautiful place. There are so many beautiful things to see.”

Our favorite excursion came with Aventuras Mayas.

Guide Amrit Garcia aka our driver, Juan, led the trip. Amrit kept the group laughing throughout the day while making safety a priority before every activity.

Our first stop was an open cenote.

Below the surface, freshwater and saltwater mixed to create a shimmering underwater effect unlike anything I had seen before.

The next location included partially covered and fully underground cenotes. Guests could cliff jump or take a zipline into the water before exploring.

Once underwater, the scenery took over.

Clear aqua-green water revealed limestone formations, underwater passages and sunlight cutting through openings above. Snorkeling felt more like exploring another world.

Some members of our group called the water freezing.

They weren’t entirely wrong.

The scenery was worth it.

Returning to Viva Azteca afterward made the combination even better: adventure during the day, frozen drinks by the pool afterward.

That’s a vacation formula I can get behind.

The Little Things Matter

Some of Viva Azteca’s best features are simple conveniences.

Rooms include coffee makers, electronic safes and minibars stocked with soft drinks upon arrival. Additional sodas are available at the bars.

The Viva Shop sells souvenirs along with useful travel items such as phone chargers.

Late arrivals and night owls also have options. A snack station serves hamburgers, hot dogs and other quick bites after the buffet closes, while one bar remains open 24 hours.

None of these features will dominate a resort brochure, but they make a stay easier.

More Than a Vacation

Viva Azteca works because the experience extends beyond its beach and amenities.

You can watch the sunrise over the Caribbean, laugh as a friend discovers the flying trapeze is harder than it looks, eat Yucatán cuisine and spend an afternoon swimming through cenotes beneath the jungle.

Many employees have worked at Viva Azteca for years, allowing returning visitors to reconnect with familiar faces.

Maria told us about an American couple who returns more than once each year after getting married at the resort. Their wedding photos still hang inside the property.

“They create nice relationships with people,” Maria said.

Before we finished talking, I asked what she hoped guests would take home that couldn’t fit inside a suitcase.

“A little bit of the culture,” she said. “The kindness.”

That may be the best description of Viva Azteca.

The Caribbean is beautiful. The food gives you plenty to explore. The cenotes create stories worth bringing home.

But the people are what make the resort feel welcoming.

Sometimes paradise is as much about who greets you as where you go.
