Why Every Baseball Game Should Be Like a Bananas Game

Forget Everything You Know About Baseball—The Savannah Bananas and Party Animals Play by Their Own Wild Rules.

March 1st, 2025

The Savannah Bananas made their much-anticipated return to South Florida, and my fiancée had been counting down the days to see them live. Spoiler alert: they did not disappoint. Judging by the packed house at LoanDepot Park, we weren’t the only ones eager for the show. I’ve been to my fair share of Marlins games over the years, but I have never seen that stadium so electric with energy and sheer joy.

From the moment we arrived until the final out, it was a non-stop thrill ride. The entertainment kicked off before the teams were even introduced. We had Princess Potassia holding court, a dad dance-off, male cheerleaders shaking things up, and a parade of antics that kept fans engaged before a single pitch was thrown. And the umpires? They weren’t just calling the game; they were part of the spectacle, busting out dance moves during their introductions and joining in on the fun throughout the night.

The pre-game shenanigans alone were worth the price of admission. Picture this: the ceremonial first pitch was replaced by a baby crawling to grab a banana (adorable and hilarious). Another baby got the full Lion King treatment, held aloft for the crowd to cheer. A banana-themed marching band paraded around the field. The Bananas’ manager broke into a breakdancing routine. The team executed a full-on Rockette-style kickline to AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. And yes, that was all before the actual game began.

Once the action started, the matchup between the Savannah Bananas and their rivals, the Party Animals, was just as entertaining as the lead-up. The team’s unique “Banana Ball” rules kept the pace brisk and the energy sky-high. Some of the best twists included: no traditional walks (instead, the batter sprints to first while the defense scrambles to touch the ball before making a play), fans being able to record outs by catching foul balls, and a strict two-hour time limit—if the game is tied at the buzzer, it’s showdown time with each hitter needing to score to earn a point. It’s baseball reimagined, and honestly, it makes the game a lot more fun for all ages.

But the entertainment didn’t stop with the game itself. Fans were showered with beads and balls, in-between-inning acts kept the momentum going, and every run was met with over-the-top celebrations. Highlights? A pitcher on stilts, dads chasing their kids across the field, TikTok dance breakouts, a player who chugged a beer before every at-bat, and roses handed out to lucky fans. It was controlled chaos in the best possible way.

Now, if you’re a baseball purist clutching your rulebook, this may not be your cup of tea. But judging by the sold-out crowds and roaring cheers, the Bananas have struck gold with their unique brand of baseball-meets-circus entertainment. Compare that to the usual turnout at an MLB game—especially for my Marlins, who rarely fill the stadium—and it’s clear they’re onto something special. If you ever get the chance to see the Savannah Bananas in action, don’t hesitate. It’s more than a game; it’s an unforgettable experience that’ll leave you smiling, laughing, and wondering why all baseball isn’t this fun.
