A Pirate-Themed Takeover at the South Florida Fair

Pirates, Ice Skating and Fried Everything: Inside the South Florida Fair’s Swashbuckling Return.

January 22nd, 2026

Running January 16th through February 1st, the South Florida Fair drops anchor once again with a bold pirate-themed takeover, transforming the fairgrounds into a lively mash-up of high-energy shows, throwback midway charm and unapologetically indulgent food.

This year’s theme leans into the spectacle, and it works.

One of the standout attractions is Legends of the Cove, an ice skating show that blends vivacious costumes with surprisingly sharp athleticism. It’s an unexpected contrast to the Florida heat and one of those shows you don’t realize you need until you’re sitting there, watching skaters glide and spin under dramatic lighting.

Elsewhere on the grounds, fan-favorites returned in full force. The comedy hypnotist continues to draw packed crowds nightly, the pig races delivered their usual dose of silly fun and live music filled the fair with background energy that kept things moving even when the midway lines slowed down.

Families will appreciate the fair’s theatrical offerings as well. A staged production of The Little Mermaid added a kid-friendly anchor, while the Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean raise the adrenaline level with sword fighting, high-wire stunts and jaw-dropping feats that include scaling the infamous Wheel of Death. It’s loud, dramatic and exactly the kind of controlled chaos you expect from a pirate-themed fair.

Animal exhibits remain a consistent draw, giving visitors a break from rides and games while adding a fun relaxed experience.

Adding depth to the pirate motif, award-winning author and living historian Robert Jacob brings Florida’s real swashbuckling past into focus, blending storytelling with historical insight that goes beyond costumes and theatrics.

And then there’s the food.

Health goals take a temporary back seat at the South Florida Fair, and that’s part of the deal. Fried food dominates, and for good reason. Fried Oreos and Buckeyes deliver every time, while returning staples like cider donuts, Fluffy’s Donuts, the infamous Donut Burger, Henry’s Old Fashioned Kettle Corn, Funnel Cakes, Roasted Corn, London Broil, Macaroni Bowls, Sirloin Tips, Turkey Legs, Corn Dogs, Curly Fries, Gyros, BBQ and Tater Tots loaded with Mac & Cheese keep the options overwhelming in the best way.

Other buzz-worthy treats in the spotlight included Dubai Chocolate Strawberries, which quickly became one of the most talked-about desserts on the grounds.

The South Florida Fair doesn’t try to reinvent itself. Instead, it sharpens what it already does well…big shows, crowd-pleasing food and themed entertainment that feels immersive without taking itself too seriously. Whether you’re there for the ice skating, the pirates, the pig races or the deep-fried nostalgia, this year’s fair leans into excess with confidence and that’s exactly why it works.

Surfside’s Paddletopia 2026 Served Up Sunshine, Sweat, and Veggie-Packed Bites

Veggies Made Great helped fuel a family-friendly weekend of free workouts, paddleboarding, coffee, small bites, and feel-good fun at 96th Street Park.

May 18, 2026

Surfside brought the good vibes this weekend with Paddletopia 2026, a two-day wellness and outdoor lifestyle event that turned 96th Street Park into a sunny little hub for movement, community, and family-friendly fun.

Held on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event welcomed kids, adults, fitness lovers, coffee drinkers, paddleboarders, and anyone looking for a fresh-air weekend by the water. The best part? So many of the experiences were free, making it easy for families and locals to drop in, move around, and enjoy the day without overthinking it.

The workout classes were a highlight, bringing plenty of energy to the park with approachable, upbeat sessions that made wellness feel fun instead of intimidating. Between the fitness classes, paddleboarding, live music, wellness activations, and relaxed outdoor atmosphere, Paddletopia had that perfect South Florida mix of active and easygoing.

Of course, no great weekend event is complete without good bites. Veggies Made Great, an official event partner, kept guests fueled with complimentary samples of their veggie-packed favorites, including the Spinach Egg White Frittata and Lemon Blueberry Muffin. The samples were a smart fit for the day: light, wholesome, tasty, and easy to enjoy between activities. Paired with coffee and other small bites available throughout the event, it made for the kind of simple, satisfying spread that both kids and adults could get behind.

The event also had a thoughtful environmental angle through the “Paddle for Plastic” initiative with Plastic Fisherman, encouraging attendees to help clean Surfside canals in exchange for eco-friendly rewards. It added a meaningful layer to the weekend, blending wellness, community, and environmental care in a way that felt natural for a coastal town like Surfside.

Overall, Paddletopia 2026 felt like exactly what a South Florida weekend should be: outdoorsy, welcoming, active, delicious, and just a little bit sun-kissed. From free fitness classes to better-for-you snacks and community-focused fun, Surfside gave families a reason to get outside and enjoy the best of wellness by the water.
