Despite Some Technical Difficulties, Toto “Hold the Line” And Deliver A Night of Timeless Melodies That Prove the ’80s Are Forever – Photos and Review of the Toto, Christopher Cross, and The Romantics Concert at the iThink Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL

The South Florida sky had just finished its daily 5PM rainshower as the gates to the iThink Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach swung open and a multi-generational crowd streamed into the venue this past Friday night. The triple bill of 80’s legends Toto, Christopher Cross and The Romantics promised a journey through the smooth sounds of a decade where melody and musicianship reigned supreme. The seats were filled with fans who had lived through the golden age of yacht rock anthems sitting alongside younger listeners who have discovered these timeless songs through social media’s cultural resurgence of all things ’80s.

The evening ignited with the unapologetic energy of The Romantics, and from the moment they launched into their set, the Detroit-bred quartet dispelled any notion of a gentle warm-up as they blasted through a blistering barrage of power pop and new wave. Frontman Wally Palmar, his voice retaining its youthful sneer, commanded the stage with a wiry energy, tearing through hits and deep cuts alike. The infectious, staccato riff of “Talking in Your Sleep” prompted an instant, roaring sing-along, a wave of voices echoing the “uh-huh, uh-huh” hook across the amphitheater. They transported the audience straight back to 1983 with the frenetic “Rock You Up”, and when the opening drum salvo of “What I Like About You” thundered through the speakers a collective jolt of energy rippled throughout the venue, setting an impossibly high bar for the rest of the night and cementing their role as far more than “just” an opening act.

A complete yet seamless sonic shift followed as Christopher Cross took the stage, the frenetic punk-adjacent energy dissolving into a lush, serene soundscape. Walking out with his signature purple guitar, Cross and his polished band settled into a groove that felt like a cool ocean breeze on a yacht. His voice, a gentle and instantly recognizable instrument, filled the venue with a profound sense of calm as he opened with the elegant shuffle of “All Right”, but it was the Grammy-winning masterpiece “Sailing” that truly redefined the evening’s atmosphere. In between the songs of his storied catalogue, Cross frequently paused to speak to the crowd and praise both Toto and The Romantics, his humble and affable stage presence making the vast venue feel intimate. He closed his set with the undeniable anthem “Ride Like the Wind”, its galloping rhythm and soaring chorus finally pulling people to their feet, before performing a reprise of “Sailing” that featured the entire crowd singing along.

When the lights dimmed and Toto – led by the guitar wizardry of Steve Lukather and the crystalline vocals of Joseph Williams – finally took the stage, the band launched into “Goodbye Elenore” to kick off an immaculate set that doubled as a clinic in progressive rock. Lukather, a true gunslinger, tore into the solo of “Rosanna” for what felt like 20 minutes, his fingers flying across the fretboard with effortless precision until his pedalboard lost power and the band had to take a quick break while the roadies worked their magic. Restarting “Rosanna” one more time from where they left off, Steve re-appeared to shred another solo while the band’s signature harmonies locked into place with a satisfying crunch.

The night was a celebration of their staggering catalogue of nearly 50 years, from the deep, swampy groove of “I’ll Supply the Love” to the West Coast sheen of “Georgy Porgy”. A profound highlight arrived during “Endless“, showcasing the individual talents of keyboardist Dennis Atlas as he took over vocals for the number. As Toto broke into “Hold the Line“, the entire crowd began to sing along, sending a jolt of pure joy through the crowd for a perfect, high-energy start to a flawless encore. This virtuosic display built an anticipatory hush that shattered the moment the opening synthesizer riff of “Africa” cascaded from the stage. The entire amphitheater became a unified choir, thousands of arms raised toward the palm trees swaying under the moonlit sky, passionately belting the blessing of the rains.

As the final chords of Toto’s most famous song faded into the Florida night, the audience lingered as they walked to their cars, basking in the shared afterglow of a perfectly curated evening. The trifecta of The Romantics, Christopher Cross, and Toto had offered more than just a simple nostalgia trip; it was a living testament to the enduring power of instrumental excellence. From the garage-rock fury of “What I Like About You” to the serene beauty of “Sailing” and the anthemic grandeur of “Africa”, the concert mapped the diverse and rich landscape of a musical era that continues to resonate across generations.
