The Soundtrack of a Life, A Beautiful Noise Explores Neil Diamond’s Journey

Published

From Brooklyn Beginnings to Sold Out Arenas, A Beautiful Noise Delivers the Heart, Hits and Humanity of Neil Diamond at the Kravis.

April 7th, 2026

At a time when the jukebox musical has become a familiar, if sometimes formulaic, fixture of the theatrical landscape, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical arrives with enough heart, spectacle, and vocal firepower to remind audiences why the genre endures. Currently on tour, this glossy production transforms the catalog of Neil Diamond songs into a theatrical experience that is as introspective as it is crowd pleasing.

Structured as a therapy session, the musical, featuring a book by Anthony McCarten, frames Diamond’s life through a series of conversations between the older, more guarded “Neil Now” (Robert Westenberg) and his therapist (Lisa Renee Pitts). It is a device that could feel contrived in lesser hands, but here it serves as an effective lens through which we explore the paradox of a performer who commanded arenas yet struggled profoundly with self doubt offstage.

From his first break into songwriting in the 1960s with “I’m a Believer” to his meteoric rise in the 1970s, Diamond’s “beautiful noise” was always the melodies and lyrics swirling around inside his head. Sorting out what it all meant became his own personal journey as both an artist and a person.

From this reflective present, the story quickly transitions into the past, where “Neil Then” is portrayed on the night attended by understudy Joe Caskey. Caskey’s performance is nothing short of exceptional. Vocally, he captures Diamond’s signature “gravel wrapped in velvet” tone with uncanny accuracy. He could not sound more like Diamond at his very best. He also conveys the singer’s evolution from a shy Brooklyn songwriter to a sequined superstar with both charisma and vulnerability.

The supporting cast brings strong, nuanced work to the stage. Tiffany Tatreau lends warmth and depth to Jaye Posner, while Hannah Jewel Kohn brings a sultry intensity to Marcia Murphey. As songwriter Ellie Greenwich, Heidi Kettenring provides both comic relief and narrative momentum, guiding the young Diamond toward his own voice.

Director Michael Mayer keeps the storytelling fluid, allowing the therapy sessions to flow seamlessly into fully staged musical numbers. The ensemble of backup singers and dancers becomes a sort of Greek chorus, appearing from behind couches and filling the stage with energy. Scenic designer David Rockwell provides a sleek, adaptable environment that shifts effortlessly from recording studios to concert arenas.

The orchestrations and arrangements elevate Diamond’s songs to their strongest form. They are performed by a tireless ensemble that fills the stage with movement and sound. While the choreography in the second act stands out, the first act choreography feels more simplistic and literal by comparison. The live orchestra is sensational, and the sound design deserves special recognition. Every word and every note comes through with crystal clarity.

Of course, the real star here is the music. With more than two dozen songs woven into the fabric of the production, the score becomes both soundtrack and storytelling engine. Classics like “Sweet Caroline,” “Cracklin’ Rosie,” and “Song Sung Blue” are delivered with a polish that invites audience participation. Those moments, including full singalongs, lean into the show’s celebratory side. At the same time, songs like “I Am… I Said,” “Solitary Man,” and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” explore the emotional depth that underscores Diamond’s complicated personal relationships.

While the musical takes some liberties with the precise chronology of events, it does so in service of something greater. Rather than functioning as a strict documentary, it becomes an examination of emotional growth. What emerges is a portrait of an artist driven as much by insecurity as by ambition, a man whose musical gift was also his most reliable form of self expression.

By the final curtain, A Beautiful Noise accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It celebrates the enduring appeal of Neil Diamond’s music while offering a glimpse into the complexities of the man behind it. It may not reinvent the jukebox musical, but it executes the form with style, sincerity, and undeniable showmanship. Do not plan on leaving early, as the audience joins in for a final version of “Sweet Caroline” that brings the house together.

This Kravis on Broadway series production of A Beautiful Noise will be appearing at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts through April 12, 2026. The venue is located at 701 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach, Florida. For tickets to this show and information on the season, call 561-832-7469 or 1-800-572-8471, or visit their website.
