The Grinch and Whoville Bring Holiday Cheer to the Stage
Stealing Christmas Never Looked So Good: The Grinch Takes Center Stage in a Festive Holiday Musical Extravaganza.
December 19th, 2024
Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical brings a heartwarming and festive experience to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, spreading holiday cheer to all ages. Based on the beloved classic Dr. Seuss story, the world of Whoville comes to life. The stage was decked out in colorful, festive décor, and the citizens of Whoville set the tone with a joyous opening number “Who Likes Christmas”

From the moment the Grinch, portrayed by Joshua Woodie, slides down and struts on stage he steals the show. Even with a heart that’s two sizes too small. For a twist to the original story, he has two versions of Max: “Old Max” that tells the story and “Young Max” who everyone knows from the original. The Grinch sings along with the town while devising a plan to cancel Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he puts an antler on Young Max and wears a disguise of Santa himself. Sneaking down the Who’s chimney he starts executing his plan by stealing gifts, the Christmas tree, and even the Whoville feast.

The Grinch’s interactions with the adorable Cindy Lou Who, fantastically played by a sweet and spunky, Vivian Atencio, are some of the most touching moments of the show. The Whoville girl is determined to show the Grinch the true meaning of Christmas. Her innocence and optimism are infectious, and her vocals quite impressive.
However, her words and hugs doesn’t stop him and leads into the song recognized by all: “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” sang perfectly by Old Max.

Other numbers, like “Welcome Christmas,” bring a sense of unity and festive joy to the performance, with the chorus of Whos coming together in a powerful, heartwarming finale. The orchestra sets perfectly captured the Christmas spirit.

The costumes were a Dr Suess delight, especially the Grinch’s furry green look. The elaborate Whoville costumes, with their exaggerated features and quirky details, add an additional layer of charm to the production. They all fit perfectly into a set that captures the essence of the winter wonderland of Whoville.

This musical adaptation retains the charm and whimsy of the original story while introducing catchy songs. An absolute festive delight and perfect holiday outing for families. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the Grinch or experiencing the story for the first time, this holiday production is sure to leave you with a smile on your face and warmth in your heart. Most importantly both our kids loved it. To quote my 8-year-old daughter, she gave it a “100 out of 10!”
