Moulin Rouge Finds New Energy in a Bold Reinvention
Moulin Rouge Reimagines Old Paris With New Sound, Big Performances, and Zero Interest in Playing It Safe.
March 17th, 2026
Although the Tony Award–winning musical Moulin Rouge! is a work of fiction, the production transports its audience so vividly that one can almost hear the accordion echoing through the theater. The richly detailed Parisian set invites us on a stroll along the Champs-Élysées, through the bohemian heights of Montmartre, and into the dazzling nightlife of the iconic cabaret.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, brought to life by Alex Nicholson, mingles with fellow painters while crafting the posters that advertise the famed red windmill’s performances. Yet this traditional landmark is reimagined with a modern twist: a vibrant soundtrack featuring contemporary hits, including songs by Lady Gaga or Katie Perry, blends seamlessly with classics like “Lady Marmalade” (“Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?”), creating a dynamic and engaging musical experience.

Gabriela Carrillo shines as Satine, the enchanting dancer, delivering a performance that is as technically impressive as it is emotionally compelling. Her command of dance and voice, paired with a captivating stage presence, results in a portrayal that feels nothing short of flawless. Ryan Vasquez, as Christian, demonstrates his Broadway pedigree with a nuanced and heartfelt performance that perfectly complements Carrillo’s energy.
The production honors the Moulin Rouge’s heritage by incorporating the traditional French can-can, while also celebrating themes of empowerment, freedom, love, and authenticity. This fusion of classic cabaret elements with contemporary music and choreography elevates the show, making it both innovative and unforgettable.
With thoughtfully curated musical selections and a cast whose versatility is a joy to witness, Moulin Rouge! leaves a lasting impression, one that may well inspire audiences to experience firsthand the Parisian landmark that gave birth to the French cabaret in the 19th century.
