Michelsen Survives a Tense First Set Against Mmoh Before Injury Forces a Retirement; Giron Overcomes Quinn in Straight Sets.

February 12th, 2025

Michael Mmoh vs Alex Michelsen – 6-7 (8-10), 3-0 Ret.

The first set was a thrilling battle of experience versus youth. Third seed Alex Michelsen took an early lead, using his powerful serve to dictate play. However, Michael Mmoh, fueled by a passionate crowd chanting his name—”Mmoh, Mmoh” in a rhythmic, almost melodic manner—found the inspiration to fight back and level the match.

The set was filled with intense rallies and momentum shifts, ultimately leading to a dramatic tiebreak. Mmoh had the set on his racquet, serving at 6-4, but Michelsen showed remarkable resilience to stay alive. Another opportunity came at 7-6, yet once again, Michelsen denied him. Finally, at 8-8, Mmoh relied on his experience to close out the set, securing a hard-fought lead.

The second set started with Michelsen in control, winning three consecutive games. However, just as the match was gaining momentum, an unfortunate turn of events occurred—Mmoh was forced to retire due to injury. This unexpected ending handed Michelsen a spot in the next round, an opportunity he will surely look to capitalize on moving forward.

Marcos Giron Secures Victory in a Thrilling Battle Against Quinn (6-3, 6-4)

The veteran Marcos Giron took an early lead, holding serve and breaking in the first two games. Displaying complete dominance on the court, he maintained control throughout the first set, never allowing his opponent a chance to recover.

The second set, however, told a different story. The young Quinn stepped up his game, using his height to generate powerful serves and execute sharp net approaches. Meanwhile, Giron relied on his arsenal of groundstrokes and exceptional quickness to chase down every ball. His inside-out forehand proved to be a key weapon, giving him a slight edge in the exchanges.

At 4-4, the match reached its peak, delivering the most electrifying rallies of the day. Both players showcased incredible shot-making, trading blistering groundstrokes and testing each other with aggressive net play. After saving three break points, Quinn faltered at a critical moment, committing a costly double fault. This handed Giron the opportunity to serve for the match—an opportunity he did not waste, sealing his well-earned victory.
