Joy, Unity, and Rock ‘n’ Roll: How Hootie & The Blowfish, Collective Soul and Edwin McCain Brought the House Down with a Night of Heartfelt Performances and Crowd Favorites!
September 28th, 2024
This past weekend at iThink Financial Amphitheater, the air buzzed with anticipation as fans gathered for a night packed with nostalgia and electrifying performances. Kicking off the evening was Edwin McCain, whose engaging presence immediately captivated the crowd. His set was a delightful warm-up, featuring a mix of heartfelt tracks, including the beloved hit “I’ll Be,” which had the audience singing along with sincerity and nostalgia.
As McCain wrapped up his performance, excitement surged for the next act. Enter Collective Soul, celebrating their an impressive 30-year journey in music. They burst onto the stage with infectious energy, launching into iconic hits like “Heavy,” “Shine,” “World I Know” and “December.” The crowd erupted into a chorus for each track, creating a powerful atmosphere that filled the amphitheater.
However, the band’s performance was not just a nostalgic trip; it was a reminder of the enduring nature of rock. A thrilling moment came when they seamlessly incorporated a sample of Aerosmith’s “Livin’ on the Edge,” showcasing their playful spirit. The excitement escalated further when they teamed up with Edwin McCain for a snazzy cover of AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds,” igniting the crowd and enhancing the camaraderie that defined the evening.
With the energy still soaring, it was time for the main event: Hootie & The Blowfish. Celebrating 30 years themselves since the release of their monumental album Cracked Rear View, they took the stage to thunderous applause. They opened with their popular cover of Canadian band 54-40’s “I Go Blind” and instantly drew the crowd into their world.
Yet, the magic really unfolded as they unleashed a string of beloved hits, including “I Will Wait,” “Time,” “Hold My Hand” and “Let Her Cry.” Frontman Darius Rucker’s undeniable charm had the audience singing along with reckless abandon. It was just pure joy everywhere.
A standout moment came when they covered R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion,” blending their signature sound with the haunting essence of the original. The band then delighted fans with a lively medley that included snippets from Notorious B.I.G. and later a bit from Kool & The Gang. Their versatile nature and high energy were present all night as they mixed their own tracks and performed covers of classics like Led Zeppelin’s “Hey, Hey What Can I Do” and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Interstate Love Song.”.
Rucker also took time to share some of his solo country hits, including his massively popular cover of “Wagon Wheel” originally by Old Crow Medicine Show and his own track “Alright,” which were met with enthusiastic cheers. A particularly special moment occurred when he collaborated with McCain on “Solitude,” a heartfelt track that highlighted their camaraderie and shared musical journey.
A special kudos goes out to all the staff at the venue. Every show they seem to go above and beyond for the crowd and this evening was no different. From efficient parking to the ever-smiling ushers, their friendly demeanor made a lasting impression. Security was vigilant yet unobtrusive, fostering a sense of safety that allowed concert-goers to fully immerse themselves in the night.
This concert was an exhilarating whirlwind of hits and heartfelt moments, a celebration of music that spanned decades.
