Sammy Hagar Brings the Best of All Words to South Florida
Sammy Hagar and His All-Star Band Kick Off Their “Best of All Worlds” Tour With a Bang – Photos and Review of the Sammy Hagar and Loverboy Concert at the iThink Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL
Fans were abuzz with electrified excitement at the iThink Financial Amphitheater this weekend as as legendary rocker Sammy Hagar hosted the opening night of his “Best of All Worlds” tour. Taking the stage with an all-star band featuring fellow Van Halen-ite Michael Anthony on bass, the prolific Jason Bonham on drums, and guitar wizard Joe Satriani, the show promised to be a night to remember (and probably the closest we’ll ever get to a Van Halen reunion these days). Kicking off the party that night was the iconic Canadian rock band Loverboy, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening of classic rock.
Loverboy pumped up the crowd with their energetic performance, playing a slew of their classic hits that had everyone singing along. The band was just as tight as ever, and it’s impressive how powerful singer Mike Reno’s voice still sounds. It’s also incredibly impressive that not only has the band been touring non-stop since their reunion more than 30 years ago, but they’ve had a majority the same members the entire time (besides their bassist, who passed away in 2000). They finished off their set with their most famous hits “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend” before departing the stage to massive applause.
As the sun set and the amphitheater filled up to the brim with eager fans, the anticipation for Sammy Hagar’s performance began to grow. Thankfully, fans didn’t have to wait too long as the lights soon dimmed and a retrospective video reflecting on Sammy’s time in Van Halen began to play on the giant LED screen flanking the stage. Finally, Sammy Hagar and his band stepped out of the shadows and took the stage, greeted with thunderous cheers and applause. Breaking into “Good Enough“, the band wasted no time in getting to the Van Halen classics that everyone wanted to hear. Continuing with “Poundcake” and “Runaround“, Sammy showcased his enduring energy and charisma, which was awe-inspiring for a 76 year old.
Throughout the night, the synergy between Hagar and his bandmates was on full display. Fellow Van Halen album Michael Anthony’s bass lines and backing vocals provided a perfect foundation, while Jason Bonham’s drumming brought a thunderous energy reminiscent of his father’s legendary work with Led Zeppelin. And of course, Joe Satriani’s guitar shredding was nothing short of virtuosic, adding a dynamic edge to every song and doing Eddie proud. We got to hear a lot more Van Halen classics than I expected, with “Panama“, “5150” and “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” all making an appearance. The band finished their marathon-length two hour performance with Sammy’s most famous solo song “I Cant Drive 55” along with a riotous medley of Van Halen classics “Space Station 55“, “Jump“, “Oh Yeah” and “When its Love“.
Sammy Hagar is the king of giving the crowd what they want, and his performance at the iThink Financial Amphitheater this weekend was not just a concert, but a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll history. With a setlist that spanned decades and featured songs that many fans thought they would never again hear live, along with a band comprised of some of the greatest musicians in the industry, Sammy Hagar delivered an amazing show that displayed why he’s still able to stun the crowd even 40 years later. Fans left the amphitheater with smiles on their faces and memories that will last a lifetime, eagerly anticipating the next time the “Red Rocker” comes to town.
