Uncover the enduring charm of Annie as it comes to life on stage, captivating audiences young and old with its musical brilliance and powerful message of Hope and Love.

October 10th, 2023

The audience, young and old, awaited the curtain to rise with great anticipation at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts to be transported back to the heartwarming world of “Annie.” This beloved musical, filled with optimism and infectious melodies, proved to be a delightful, nostalgic experience.

From the moment the curtain rose, the stage design took the audience to 1930’s New York City, where the tale of the brave, red-haired orphan and her beloved dog, Sandy, unfolded. Annie, played by Rainier (Rainey) Treviño, was a true sensation. She brought the character to life in a way that touched every audience member with her singing, acting and unfailing hope. Her interactions with Sandy, who was portrayed by a sweet dog performer, Georgie, were especially endearing.

Miss Hannigan, portrayed by Stefanie Londino, was a delightful antagonist. Her comic timing and over-the-top antics provided a perfect contrast to Annie’s sweetness. Her rendition of “Little Girls” was a showstopper, and the audience couldn’t help, but love to hate her character.

However, Christopher Swan did an amazing job himself as Oliver Warbucks.  He complemented the role of Annie and had great stage presence with Julia Nicole Hunter, who played Grace Farrell.

The ensemble cast, including the orphans and members of FDR’s cabinet, brought a vibrancy and energy to the stage that was infectious. The choreography was lively and entertaining, with standout dance numbers like “It’s a Hard-Knock Life” and “Easy Street,” getting audience members wanting to dance themselves.

One of the highlights of the performance was the portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt by Mark Woodard. His warm, paternal demeanor and excellent delivery of witty one-liners added depth to the storyline. The scenes between Annie and FDR were touching, reminding the audience of the musical’s underlying themes of hope and resilience.

The musical numbers, including the iconic “Tomorrow” and “Maybe,” were executed with exceptional vocal talent. The live orchestra brought the timeless score to life, and the audience could feel the emotional power of each song. Costume design, makeup, and lighting added to the overall spectacle of the show. The elegant attire of Grace Farrell and the vintage costumes worn by the orphans were a visual treat, and the lighting design created an evocative ambiance that complemented the storytelling.

“Annie” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts was a splendid journey into the world of hope, love and the enduring spirit of the human heart. This production successfully brought a classic to life for a new generation while still delighting those familiar with the story. It was a heartwarming and entertaining night, and the standing ovation at the end was well-deserved. “Annie” remains a musical treasure, and this performance was a shining example of its enduring charm.
