Breaking Bones, Breaking Barriers and Breaking Records: Thad Jean on Faith, Family and Carrying Haiti’s Pride into Every Fight.

September 19th, 2025

In the world of mixed martial arts, the story of Thad Jean is one of faith, resilience and cultural pride. The first Haitian to claim a PFL title, Jean’s rise from high school football star to undefeated MMA fighter is as inspiring as it is improbable.

Jean’s journey began in Broward County, where he played running back for Northeast High School. In 2017, a torn LCL could have ended his athletic aspirations, but instead, it redirected them. “When I first messed up my LCL, not being able to play football really put me in a depressive state,” he shared. “And who else to grab you out of that state other than Christ?”

Guided by his faith, Jean discovered martial arts through a friend’s recommendation. Despite minimal wrestling experience, he instantly connected with the sport. “I just knew this was my calling. Thank God I answered,” he said.

Faith remains central to Jean’s mindset both inside and outside the cage. He recalls moments in fight camp where prayer became his anchor, particularly while battling fear and uncertainty. Listening to the hymn No Longer a Slave to Fear, he would pray for mental fortitude, discipline and the strength to meet each challenge head-on. “The what-ifs never happen; it’s the fear we create. God puts trials in your life to make you stronger,” he explained.

Jean’s Haitian identity also shapes his approach to combat and life. “Haitian people are strong, resilient and prideful. Once we get out of the slump, our potential skyrockets,” he said. That pride fuels his determination to train harder, stay disciplined and respect every opponent. He recounted a humbling sparring experience where a smaller opponent caught him in a chokehold, which became a reminder to never to underestimate anyone.

Beyond his undefeated record, Jean emphasizes mindset and presence. He crafted his fight persona, the Silverback, inspired by a lucid dream where he felt immense power and clarity. “It’s a character, a persona I bring into the cage,” he said. Style, he explains, is part of building that confidence and energy.

Even with his intense focus, Jean stays connected to his roots. Food remains a joyful part of his life, particularly the Haitian classic, legume. “I love legume—it’s my favorite meal, and I don’t feel guilty about it,” he laughed. He also keeps a light-hearted streak, joking about being undefeated in dominoes… except against his father.

Looking forward, Jean envisions a legacy that transcends sports. He wants to be remembered first as a child of God, a soldier of faith and a positive influence. “I want Haitian kids to see that you can follow Christ, fight with all your heart, and stay positive throughout the journey,” he said. He also dreams of bringing MMA events back to Haiti, hoping to inspire future generations of athletes.

When asked about his walkout song, Jean didn’t hesitate. He would choose Kylie Kyemi’s “FBI, DEA,” a track that embodies both personal strength and cultural message: resilience and independence.

From a football player sidelined by injury to a champion fighter carrying the pride of Haiti into the spotlight, Thad Jean’s story is a testament to faith, determination and the power of staying true to oneself.
