Come What May: Moulin Rouge Still Has the Spark
Step into the World of Bohemian Beauty and Forbidden Love: Moulin Rouge’s Touring Production Brings Broadway Brilliance to South Florida!
March 25th, 2025
I’ve been a fan of Moulin Rouge since its film production in 2001. I can still remember my 10-year-old self sitting in front of my grandmother’s television and my uncles putting it on. They, of course, hadn’t asked my mother if I could watch this movie about a prostitute who falls in love. I was an instant fan. Dazzled by the costumes and the diamonds, this movie held such a close place in my heart that I literally used a quote in my wedding.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this on Broadway and was curious how the traveling production would measure up. While the production on New York’s Broadway ave was in a category of its own, the performance at the Kravis Center would have made any fan proud.
You have to go into watching this musical understanding that it will loosely resemble the 2001 film production. Satine, played by Arianna Rosario is actually referred to as Marie throughout the musical. Rosario wows the crowd in numbers like “The Sparkling Diamond” and “Firework,” which truly showcases her singing ability and dynamic character.

Toulouse-Lautrec, played by Jahi Kearse is given an incredible role as the playwright to the fictional musical. Not only does he adopt this role well, but he adds the bohemian touch that is necessary to capture the “children of the revolution.” His vocals are only bested by lead, Jay Johnson who plays the adoring Christian. As a child, I had a major crush on this character and to see him brought to life was such a pleasure. Songs like “Roxanne” and “Come What May” swayed the audience and brought us along through this magical love story.
I would be a fool to leave out the incredible costume designer Catherine Zuber, who was left with the incredible task of capturing the essence of Moulin Rouge and she did not disappoint. Her partnership with set designer Derek McLane transported the audience to the streets of Paris and beyond.

Overall, I loved it. The music, the atmosphere, the talented actors and actresses. Though the plot is devastating, the love story is one worth watching. If you love music, and love singing along to over a dozen very recognizable songs, this one’s for you!
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is the winner of 10 Tony Awards® — including Best Musical!
