The seeds for From Brooklyn to Boca were sown six years ago during a table read hosted by Deni. As a screenwriter, she frequently holds these sessions to hear how her scripts resonate. This particular evening brought together three SAG actresses, including the vibrant Sharon Pfeiffer, a former mob wife with a treasure trove of tales and a knack for comedy. Deni recalls, “I just met these women, and at the time, I was going through a tough period in my life.” Tragically, Deni’s husband passed away from cancer in 2019, and shortly after, the world was hit by the COVID pandemic.

In the midst of this challenging time, Laurel Levy approached Deni with the idea to write a short film, which they successfully completed. However, it was Sharon’s captivating concept that truly ignited their creative partnership. With a unique story about mobsters entering witness protection and moving to Boca Raton, where they must embrace Jewish culture, Deni and Sharon began their writing journey.

Transitioning from a TV series to a feature film, and ultimately to a stage play, the duo found their groove through collaboration. Deni explains how they utilized Sharon’s rich background and knowledge of mob culture to craft authentic characters. “Sharon knew her characters; she had names for them,” Deni shared, emphasizing the importance of trust in their partnership. “I always felt like I was her vehicle… I would add a lot to it, but Sharon knew her characters.”

Despite some creative challenges, Deni highlights how their unique skills complemented each other. “I had to learn the lingo,” she admits, laughing about her initial unfamiliarity with terms like “made man.” They would brainstorm together, often leading to fits of laughter as they honed their comedic timing. Deni recounts a particularly funny moment during their writing sessions, saying, “I actually wet my pants one night. We just laughed so much!”

As they developed their script, they sought feedback through a live reading with an audience of 90 people, an experience that validated their hard work. “The audience loved it. They laughed the whole way through,” Deni recalled. Among those present was a Broadway producer who encouraged them to consider a full-scale production. The energy in the room confirmed their belief in the project’s potential.

With help from Shari Pemberton, another talented writer and director who joined the team, they began adapting their script for the stage. Deni reflects, “It was not easy, because it was originally written as a film, but we had to convert it to a play format.” They found ways to balance humor with heartfelt moments, carefully crafting scenes that reflect both the comedic nuances of mob culture and the Jewish community.

Throughout the interview, Deni touched on the rich cultural connections that permeate the narrative. She explained how both Italian and Jewish cultures share familial values and expressiveness. “Italians and Jews both have a knack for buying everything and selling things more,” she noted, hinting at some clever dialogue in the script. The show humorously explores themes of identity and belonging as the mobsters navigate their new lives in Boca, leading to poignant and laugh-out-loud moments.
