Skateboarding Legend Christian Hosoi Reflects on the Evolution of the Sport and Its Cultural Impact.

October 4th, 2017

In a recent interview, skateboarding icon Christian Hosoi reminisced about his early days in the sport and shared insights into its remarkable evolution. Hosoi, a pioneer of aerial tricks and a central figure in the skateboarding community, expressed his belief that skateboarding has transformed from a niche activity into a global phenomenon.

As a child, Hosoi idolized martial arts legends like Bruce Lee, envisioning a future where skateboarding would reach similar heights of popularity. “If I love it this much, it’s going to be as popular as Bruce Lee,” he stated confidently. Today, with events like the X Games and countless competitions occurring weekly, it’s clear that his prophetic vision has come to fruition. Skateboarding has not only become a sport but also a vibrant lifestyle, deeply intertwined with music, fashion, and artistic expression.

A key part of this narrative is encapsulated in the new film Made in Venice,” which highlights the struggles and triumphs of the skateboarding community in Venice Beach. Hosoi emphasized that the documentary showcases the determination of skateboarders who fought against societal barriers to establish their identity and sport in a previously unwelcoming environment. “We pushed through those barriers… we never took no for an answer,” he reflected on the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.

The film also tells the story of Jesse Martinez, a pivotal figure in the establishment of the Venice Beach skate park. Martinez’s tireless advocacy transformed the area into a beloved destination for skaters. Hosoi praised Martinez for his dedication, stating, “He’s the one that has kept that park spotless since day one.” Despite the ongoing challenges in securing funding and support for the park’s maintenance, Hosoi believes that Martinez’s commitment is a testament to the spirit of the community.

The skateboard culture, as Hosoi described, transcends social and economic boundaries, offering a sense of belonging and purpose to people from all walks of life. “Skateboarding allows kids to dream… it’s a beacon of hope,” he noted, suggesting that the sport fosters ambition and creativity among youth, encouraging them to pursue their dreams both on and off the board.

In a time marked by division and unrest, Hosoi sees skateboarding as a unifying force. “There are no walls and barriers in skateboarding,” he remarked, highlighting how the sport brings together individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences. “If only everyone got a chance to ride a skateboard, maybe people could be more unified,” he mused.

As Hosoi continues to inspire new generations of skaters, his reflections serve as a reminder of the rich history and culture of skateboarding, a sport that has evolved into a powerful means of expression and community-building. With the Venice Beach skate park thriving as a symbol of perseverance and creativity, the legacy of skaters like Hosoi and Martinez will undoubtedly continue to resonate for years to come.
