Experience the Best of Curaçao: A Weekend Full of Rhythm, Flavor and Rich Heritage at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

When I first learned about the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival, I knew it would be the perfect excuse to visit the Caribbean gem of Curaçao. Discovered by Christopher Colombus in 1499, the island nation is known for its rich culture, stunning beaches and vibrant architecture. Upon working with the tourism board of Curacao and Diamond PR, lodging was set at the Acoya Curaçao Resort Villas & Spa.  Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere and cozy surroundings. The resort’s lush landscape and inviting pools made it clear that relaxation was a top priority here.

But my first evening wasn’t just about unwinding; I had dinner plans at Pasawa Box Eatery, a unique street food market concept. The place was buzzing with energy, and the variety of flavors offered was nothing short of amazing. From local specialties to international delights and libations, the market was a food lover’s paradise, and I left fully satisfied, eager for the night’s main event.

The festival kicked off in spectacular fashion, with performances by Afro 23 and Leon Torres setting the stage for the headliners. But it was Chic, featuring the legendary Nile Rodgers, that truly stole the show. Rodgers, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, treated the audience to a selection of hits from his incredible career. His influence on music is unparalleled, with a catalog that includes iconic tracks by David Bowie, Madonna, Diana Ross, Duran Duran, Sister Sledge, INXS, Daft Punk and of course, Chic. It was a night of pure musical magic and knowing that Rodgers has sold over 500 million albums worldwide only added to the awe of seeing him live.

The following day, Friday, I explored Willemstad, the island’s capital, on a two-hour Tuk Tuk tour. The tour emphasized Curacao’s rich historical and cultural background, weaving together narratives of colonialism, economic shifts and architectural developments. Despite the sweltering heat—reminiscent of weather I have in South Florida — I was captivated by the city’s charm. Willemstad is a city of festive colors and engaging art. The tradition of colorful architecture dates back to the early 19th century, when Governor Albert Kikkert, who suffered from headaches, declared that all buildings should be painted in colors other than white. Whether his motives were purely health-related or influenced by financial interests in a paint company remains a topic of debate. Regardless, the result is a city that’s as vibrant as its history.

A few highlights on the tour included: a visit to the Queen Emma Bridge and San Anna Bay. The Queen Emma Bridge affectionately known as the “Swinging Old Lady” was built in 1888 and made of 60 pontoons, this floating pedestrian bridge can swing open to allow ships to pass. The San Anna Bay is the natural harbor that separates the capital into two sides: Punda and Otrobanda.

For lunch, I headed to Plasa Bieu, also known as the Old Market, located in the heart of Punda. This bustling food court is a haven for authentic Curaçaoan cuisine. The open kitchen setup allows you to see the dishes being prepared right in front of you, with fresh ingredients sourced daily. I indulged in local favorites like Lamb, Papaya Stew, Kabritu Stoba (stewed goat), Tutu ku Bakijouw (polenta with black-eyed peas), and Funchi Sticks (fried or cooked corn dough). But the highlight was the Repa di Pampuna (sweet pumpkin pancakes) that were so delicious, I found myself craving more with each bite.

That evening, dinner at Dreams Curaçao Resort, Spa & Casino set the tone for another night of incredible music.

The lineup was star-studded, with performances by several chart-toppers, Juan Luis Guerra, Gregory Porter, Gladys Knight, Seal, Judith Hill, Joss Stone and Marc Anthony. The energy was electric as each artist brought their unique style to the stage, making it a night to remember. First up was Juan Luis Guerra who’s catalog of top Latin hits had the heavily Spanish-speaking crowd swooning and singing along to every word from the start with “Rosalia.” Next, the 2x Grammy Award winning Jazz artist Gregory Porter took the stage and smoothly took the crowd on a blissful journey with “Holding On” a Disclosure cover, “Take Me to the Alley” and a 3-song medley from The Temptations.

Some other highlights included the vocal prowess of Gladys Knight showcasing her uncanny range even now at 80 years old during Motown favorites like “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Seal singing at the edge of the runway and performing his massive hits “Kiss From a Rose” and “Crazy,” plus award winners Judith Hill and Joss Stone giving fans an angelic set. However, headliner Marc Anthony was unquestionably the star of the day with a massive catalog of Latin hits, especially “Vivir Mi Vida.”

Saturday was dedicated to relaxation and adventure at Daaibooi, a beach on Curaçao’s West End. The area is known for its stunning beaches and after witnessing it firsthand, the claim of it’s beauty is definitely justified. We spent the day there in our own small paradise enjoying a plentiful BBQ and a variety of drinks by the water. However, some of us couldn’t resist the thrill of jet skiing around the island, while others opted for snorkeling. The underwater world was a kaleidoscope of colors, with small, vibrant fish darting around as we explored the crystal-clear waters, a few of us with the assistance of a jet powered underwater scooter.

As the sun set, we ventured to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort for dinner, where the food was as delightful as the surroundings.

The evening’s concert lineup was just as impressive as the previous nights, kicking off with the powerhouse performance of award-winning actress and producer Jennifer Hudson, who lit up the stage with “Spotlight.” Italian jazz and rock guitarist Matteo Mancuso showcased his incredible virtuosity, while the talented Kamasi Washington delivered a stunning saxophone performance that left everyone in awe.

The star-studded lineup didn’t stop there; international pop sensation Eros Ramazzotti brought his signature flair, followed by the captivating jazz sounds of Liz Wright. Aloe Blacc added his smooth soul-pop vibe to the mix, performing crowd favorites like “I’m The Man,” “I Need a Dollar,” and “Wake Me Up.”

And to top it all off, Latin megastar Maluma closed the night with an unforgettable set. The rich variety of genres and the talent on display really reinforced the festival’s status as a premier music event. Fans were treated to an incredible experience, with several artists engaging with the crowd. Maluma even made it a point to pose for photos with his supporters. The night was filled with his hit tracks like “Felices los 4,” “Chantaje,” “Borro Cassette,” “Hawái,” “11 PM” and “Corazón,” creating an electric atmosphere that everyone will remember long after the final notes faded away.

After another late night of music and dancing, Sunday was much more laid back. We started the day with a visit to Dinah Veeris Herb Garden, where we learned all about the island’s traditional medicinal plants.

Next, we visited the massive Aloe Vera Plantation, which spans 10 acres, with 5 acres actively cultivated with 100,000 aloe vera plants. The cultivation helps treating skin irritations, aiding in hair treatments, and serving as a digestive aid when consumed in small amounts.

As our early afternoon came to a close, we had one last visit exploring Amazonia Curacao. The adventure was definitely a memorable one as we were guided on an approximately 45-minute “Jungle Tour” where fun and mystery seemingly awaited at each turn. During our short expedition, we got to interact with a dancing cockatoo before stepping into an ancient temple filled with snakes, spiders and other reptiles. A few of us were even brave enough to hold one. Thereafter, we walked down a long winding pathway and encountered a few sassy little monkeys. The interaction was kind of surreal as they jumped onto us to get a snack. There didn’t seem to be the slightest fear in them at all. The tour really was a pleasant mix of thrills and nature, inviting you to unleash your adventurous spirit in a breathtaking and informative setting.

Lunch at Zest Beach Café was a tranquil affair, with the sound of the waves providing the perfect backdrop to our meal.

Later, we enjoyed dinner and a nightcap at Mood Beach Cafe, a trendy spot known for its draft beers, open wines, and sophisticated cocktails. The casual, social atmosphere was the ideal way to wind down after a weekend of excitement.

Before heading to the airport, we made one last stop at Number Ten, a charming café set in a restored mansion on the grounds of Landhuis Bloemhof, one of Curaçao’s most imaginative art galleries. The café serves fresh, simple breakfasts and lunches, and I savored every bite of my final meal on the island. Strolling around the estate, we visited the impressive Cathedral of Thorns and soaked in the peaceful ambiance of the courtyard, surrounded by native trees and birds.

As I boarded my flight back home, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences I’d had in Curaçao. From the world-class music at the North Sea Jazz Festival to the island’s rich cultural history, vibrant architecture, and stunning natural beauty, it was a trip I would never forget. Curaçao had not only met but exceeded all my expectations, leaving me with memories—and flavors—that I’ll treasure for a lifetime.

This diversity caters to all types of beachgoers, whether you’re looking to relax or dive into adventure.

Affordability: Curacao is often more budget-friendly. You can find delicious meals for as low as $3, making it easier to enjoy local cuisine without breaking the bank. Aruba, on the other hand, typically presents higher prices for similar experiences.

Adventure and Nature: For outdoor enthusiasts, Curacao offers not just stunning beaches but also hiking, bird watching and exploration of natural parks. This variety of landscapes—from rugged cliffs to serene lagoons—makes it an ideal destination for those looking to connect with nature beyond just sunbathing.

Local Engagement: Curacao’s local markets and vibrant festivals create opportunities for genuine interaction with the community. Visitors can enjoy authentic crafts and participate in local traditions, fostering a deeper connection to the island’s culture.

While both islands have their appeal, Curacao shines through with its authenticity, cultural richness and diverse offerings. If you’re looking for a destination that promises not just beautiful scenery, but also meaningful experiences, Curacao should be at the top of your list, especially with a highly engaging event like the North Sea Jazz Festival.
